iPhone XS Has No Sound or Audio Issues? Here’s How to Fix It
Is your iPhone XS suddenly not making any sound? Whether you’re missing ringtone alerts, hearing static during calls, or just dealing with completely silent apps — you’re not alone. Fortunately, most iPhone sound issues are software-related and can be fixed at home.
Here are the top solutions to try when your iPhone XS has no sound or starts acting up with audio.
1. Check the Ring/Silent Switch First
Before diving into any deep troubleshooting, double-check your Ring/Silent switch (on the left side of your iPhone).
- If the switch is flipped down (orange showing), your phone is in silent mode.
- Flip it up to enable ringer mode.
- Try toggling it a couple times to reset the behavior.
If your iPhone is already set to ring and still has no sound, move on to the next steps.
2. Restart Your iPhone (Soft Reset)
A quick reboot can clear out temporary glitches and refresh your sound system.
To restart iPhone XS:
- Hold the Side button + Volume Up or Down until the slide to power off screen appears.
- Slide to turn it off.
- Wait 30 seconds, then hold the Side button again to power it on.
After rebooting, test your sound using the ringer, YouTube, or a music app.
3. Turn Off “Do Not Disturb”
Do Not Disturb silences calls, messages, and alerts — even if your ringer is on.
To turn it off:
- Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and make sure it’s toggled OFF.
Or:
- Open Control Center and tap the moon icon to disable it.
4. Check Sound Settings and Volume
Make sure system sounds aren’t turned down too low.
- Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics
- Drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right to increase volume
- Also test using the physical Volume Up button
Try adjusting both hardware and software volume in case one is out of sync.
5. Disable Bluetooth (in Case It’s Routing Audio Elsewhere)
If your iPhone is connected to Bluetooth headphones, the sound may be playing through them.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth
- Toggle Bluetooth OFF
- Or tap the “i” next to connected devices and tap Forget This Device
After that, check if your iPhone speaker is working again.
6. Reset All Settings
If a settings misconfiguration is blocking sound, a reset can help — and it won’t erase your personal data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone
- Tap Reset > Reset All Settings
- Enter your passcode and confirm
Your phone will reboot and revert system settings like Wi-Fi, volume, and notifications to their defaults.
Still No Sound?
If your iPhone XS still has no sound, or you’re hearing distorted audio or static:
- Check for dust or debris in the speaker grille
- Try using headphones to confirm the issue isn’t hardware-related
- Try a factory reset as a last resort (after backing up your data)
- Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store — especially if your phone was dropped or exposed to moisture
