How to troubleshoot iPhone XS with no sound or has audio problems
Before you start performing any of the given procedures, work on the very obvious and that is the ringer switch on your iPhone. This is a must-do when dealing with no sound problem on an iPhone. Many people have overlooked it and jump to trying a series of workarounds but to no avail. To make sure you don’t make the same mistake, try flipping the ringer switch on your iPhone XS back and forth. Remember to position the switch to ringer mode otherwise, your iPhone is muted. If it’s already set to ring mode but your iPhone still has no sound, flip the switch to silent and then back to ring mode again. If that doesn’t help, then this is the time you can start troubleshooting your iPhone XS software.
First solution: Reboot your iPhone XS (soft reset).
For first occurrences, random software errors and glitches are likely to blame and usually remedied by a restart. If the problem on only occurs to a certain app, then the app could be just glitching. Try to quit or end the app first and then open it again. If your iPhone XS audio functions were working fine until now, perform a soft reset or reboot your phone to get rid of these errors. Here’s how:
- Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
- Release the buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears.
- Drag the power off slider to the right.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power button or Side button again until the phone reboots.
Restarting the iPhone also dumps junk files that are stored among other cached files and temporary data on the phone memory. While cached files offer some benefits, corrupted cached files do the opposite and therefore need to be cleared. And the simplest way to do this is by performing a soft reset on your iPhone XS.
Second solution: Turn off Do Not Disturb feature.
Another thing to consider checking on if your iPhone suddenly lost sound or audio functions aren’t working as intended is the iOS feature called Do Not Disturb. As the name implies, enabling this feature prevents any notification sound alerts and thereby mutes the phone unless you set some exceptions. To make sure this isn’t what’s halting your iPhone XS from making any sound for incoming calls, text messages, or other notification alerts, refer to these steps to disable Do Not Disturb:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Select Do Not Disturb.
- If Do Not Disturb is enabled or turned on, toggle the switch to disable the feature.
You can also access and manage DND settings on your iPhone XS through the control center.
- To do so, simply launch the Control Center, find the crescent moon-like icon. That icon represents the Do Not Disturb function of your iPhone. Tap that icon to turn the feature on or off. In this case, it has to be turned off.
After applying these settings changes, reboot your iPhone XS and then test to see if it’s sound or audio functions are already working.
Third solution: Adjust the Ringer and Alerts settings.
Adjusting the sound volume on your iPhone is usually done through the physical Volume Up and Down controls. However, some applications require adjustments to both the hardware and software volume controls. The software volume controls are modified through your iPhone settings with these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Scroll down to and tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Then drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right to increase the volume level. Otherwise, drag the slider to the left.
If your iPhone XS sound is audible but the sound quality isn’t that fine, try to adjust the ringer and alerts slider to either lower or increase the volume level and see if that brings some positive outcomes. Some apps may not be able to render fine audio when the volume is set to a very high level thus lowering the volume is necessary. Or it could be the other way around.
Fourth solution: Disconnect any Bluetooth device connected to your iPhone XS.
If your iPhone XS is currently paired with or connected to a Bluetooth device, then you wouldn’t be able to hear it sound because the sound output is bypassed to the other device like BT stereo, headsets, or other Bluetooth-enabled sound accessories paired to your iOS device. To rule this out, try to disable Bluetooth on your iPhone XS with these steps:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Scroll to and tap Bluetooth.
- Toggle the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature off.
Alternatively, you can delete all Bluetooth connections from your iPhone XS with these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth to view a list of Bluetooth connections or paired devices.
- To forget a connection, tap the information “i” icon next to the paired device then tap the option to Forget this Device.
- Confirm action when asked to continue.
Restart your device after making all these changes and then try to launch a sound app to test if your iPhone XS audio functions are already working as intended.
Fifth solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone XS.
Invalid customizations can also affect audio functions of your iPhone. If everything was working fine with your iPhone XS sound but suddenly changed after you made changes to your device settings, then invalid configurations are likely to blame. To clear this out, reverting the changes back to the previous configuration should fix it. But if you couldn’t figure out exactly of which options or settings to work on, then you can just reset all settings on your iPhone XS. Doing so will erase all customized settings from the phone and then restores the original or default configurations. This reset does not affect any saved data on the phone memory, so creating backups won’t be necessary. Here’s how it’s done:
- Tap to open the Settings app from Home.
- Tap General.
- Scroll to and then tap Reset.
- Select Reset all settings from the given options.
- Enter your device passcode when asked.
- Tap the option to confirm reset.
After the reset, your iPhone should restart by itself. Just wait until it boots up and then you can enable necessary features including Wi-Fi to use them again on your phone. Then test and see if that fixes the no sound or other audio problems on your iPhone XS. Otherwise, you need to consider other options including service.
You can take your device to an Apple-authorized service center if none of the previous solutions is able to bring positive results. Your iPhone XS might have accumulated some sort of physical or liquid damage affecting its sound functions. If that’s the case, hardware repair is needed. For other suggestions and further assistance, you can also contact your device carrier. Just let them know of what exactly happened and how your iPhone XS ended having no sound and other audio problems.
