iPhone XS Can’t Send or Receive Picture Messages (MMS)? Try These Fixes

If your iPhone XS isn’t sending or receiving MMS or picture messages, it can be a frustrating issue—especially when everything else seems to work fine. Whether you’re trying to share a photo over cellular data or Wi-Fi, several factors could be causing the problem. The good news? Most MMS issues can be fixed with a few simple steps.

Here’s how to get your iPhone XS sending and receiving picture messages again.

1. Restart Your iPhone XS

Sometimes all your phone needs is a quick refresh to clear out minor bugs.

To soft reset:

  • Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until you see the Slide to Power Off prompt.
  • Slide to turn off.
  • After 30 seconds, press the Side button again to power back on.

Once it boots up, try sending a picture message to yourself.

2. Make Sure Cellular Data Is Enabled

MMS messages require a data connection to send and receive—Wi-Fi won’t work unless you’re using iMessage.

To check:

  • Go to Settings > Cellular.
  • Make sure Cellular Data is turned on.
  • Scroll down and ensure MMS Messaging is also turned on under Settings > Messages.

3. Toggle Airplane Mode On and Off

This trick quickly resets your phone’s wireless connections.

Here’s how:

  • Go to Settings > Airplane Mode.
  • Turn it on, wait 10 seconds, then turn it off again.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi or cellular and try sending an MMS.

4. Toggle MMS Messaging Off and Back On

Sometimes refreshing the MMS feature is all it takes.

To do it:

  • Go to Settings > Messages.
  • Turn MMS Messaging off.
  • Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Also enable Send as SMS and Group Messaging if needed.

Restart your iPhone afterward.

5. Update iOS and Carrier Settings

Outdated software or carrier settings can cause MMS issues.

To check for iOS updates:

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If available, tap Download and Install.

To check for carrier updates:

  • Go to Settings > General > About.
  • Wait a few seconds—if a carrier update is available, you’ll see a prompt to install it.

6. Reset Network Settings

Misconfigured or corrupted network settings can block MMS.

To reset:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  • Tap Reset Network Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

This will erase Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, so make sure you reconnect to your networks afterward.

Still Not Sending or Receiving Picture Messages?

If you’ve tried all the above and your iPhone XS still refuses to send or receive MMS:

  • Try a different SIM card to see if the issue is account-related.
  • Contact your carrier to ensure MMS is enabled on your account.
  • If the issue started after a recent update or system crash, consider a factory reset or DFU mode restore—just make sure to back up your data first.
