iPhone XS Max Touch Screen Freezing After iOS 13.2? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone XS Max screen keeps freezing or stops responding after updating to iOS 13.2, you’re not alone. This kind of issue is usually tied to software glitches, buggy apps, or system errors introduced during the update. The good news is there are several ways to troubleshoot and fix it — even if the screen isn’t working properly.

Try these solutions one by one until your iPhone is back to normal.

Force Restart Your iPhone (Even If the Screen Is Frozen)

When your screen is unresponsive, a regular restart won’t help. Instead, do a force restart using the physical buttons:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

This clears out temporary glitches that could be freezing the screen.

Update All Apps

Outdated apps can conflict with new iOS versions and cause system lag or freezing.

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll down to Available Updates.
  4. Tap Update All (or update apps individually if you prefer).
  5. Restart your iPhone after updating.

Restore From a Backup Using iTunes or Finder

If the screen problems started right after the update, restoring a pre-update backup might roll back the bug.

  1. Connect your iPhone to a Mac or PC using a Lightning cable.
  2. Open iTunes (on Windows or macOS Mojave and earlier) or Finder (on macOS Catalina and later).
  3. Put your iPhone into recovery mode:
    • Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
    • Press and hold the Side button until the recovery mode screen appears.
  4. When prompted, choose Restore Backup.
  5. Select the most recent backup made before the update and follow the on-screen instructions.

Do a Recovery Mode Restore (Reinstall iOS)

If restoring a backup didn’t work, reinstalling iOS through recovery mode might help:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer and open iTunes or Finder.
  2. Force your iPhone into recovery mode:
    • Press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
    • Press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen (cable and iTunes logo).
  3. Choose Update to reinstall iOS without wiping your data.
  4. If that doesn’t help, repeat the process but choose Restore (this will erase everything).

Try a DFU Mode Restore (Advanced Option)

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode goes deeper than recovery mode. Use this only if nothing else works:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via Lightning cable.
  2. Open iTunes or Finder.
  3. Do the button combo carefully:
    • Press and release Volume Up.
    • Press and release Volume Down.
    • Press and hold the Side button until the screen goes black.
    • Then press and hold the Volume Down button while still holding the Side button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down until your iPhone appears in iTunes/Finder.
  4. Follow the prompts to Restore your iPhone.

To exit DFU mode at any time, just do a force restart.

Still Freezing? It Might Be a Hardware Issue

If none of these steps fix the freezing, there’s a chance the update just exposed a deeper hardware problem — like a failing digitizer or internal damage. At this point, it’s best to visit an Apple Store or authorized repair center and have them run diagnostics.
