Apps Keep Crashing on iPhone X After iOS 13.3 Update? Here’s How to Fix It
Updated to iOS 13.3 and now your apps are acting up? Some iPhone X users have reported random app crashes or apps that just won’t open after the update. If you’re running into the same problem, don’t worry — here’s how to troubleshoot it and (hopefully) get your apps running smoothly again.
1. Close All Background Apps
Apps that were left open during the update can cause issues. Clear them out to avoid conflicts.
How to close background apps:
- Swipe up from the bottom and pause to view open apps.
- Swipe left or right to browse through them.
- Swipe up on each app to close.
Once done, try reopening your crashing app.
2. Restart Your iPhone X
A simple reboot can resolve minor post-update glitches.
Soft reset (normal restart):
- Press and hold the Side button + Volume Up or Down.
- Slide to power off.
- Wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
Force restart (if the screen is unresponsive):
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
3. Update All Your Apps
Outdated apps may not play nice with the new iOS.
To update:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile picture (top right).
- Scroll down to Available Updates.
- Tap Update All, or tap Update beside each app.
After updating, restart your phone and test the apps again.
4. Reset All Settings
This won’t delete your data but will revert system settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and display preferences back to default — which can fix post-update configuration conflicts.
Steps:
- Go to Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
Your iPhone will reboot. Set up essential settings again and see if your apps are stable now.
5. Factory Reset Your iPhone X
If glitches persist, a full wipe might be necessary. This erases everything — so back up your data first using iCloud or iTunes.
To factory reset:
- Go to Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
After reset, set up your iPhone as new (don’t restore from a backup right away) and test the problem apps.
6. Try a Recovery Mode Restore via iTunes
Still no luck? A recovery mode restore reinstalls iOS but keeps your data (if you choose “Update” instead of “Restore”).
Here’s how:
- Connect iPhone X to your computer.
- Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
- In iTunes or Finder, choose Update (or Restore if you want to erase everything).
Wait until the process completes, then test your apps again.
7. Do a DFU Restore (Last Resort)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest restore level and wipes everything — but it can fix even stubborn system bugs.
How to enter DFU mode:
- Connect iPhone to your computer.
- Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the screen goes black.
- Once black, keep holding the Side button and also press the Volume Down button for 5 seconds.
- Release the Side button, but keep holding Volume Down until iTunes/Finder detects the iPhone in recovery mode (screen remains black).
Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the device.
Still Not Fixed? Contact Apple or the App Developer
If only one specific app is misbehaving, the issue might be on the developer’s side. Reach out to the app support team or check for upcoming updates.
