Problem: iPhone X wifi won’t toggle on (connects but no internet

I have serious problems with WiFi in my iPhone X. The symptoms are several, I try to list them:

YouTube video

  • the icon shows connection to WiFi (next to battery icon on top right), but there’s no data transfer, and the only way is to disconnect from the WiFi and join again when opening settings.
  • next to “WiFi” indicator it shows connection to a certain network, but the phone is on normal mobile network (no WiFi).
  • When opening the WiFi page, the WiFi button is toggled off. Clicking on it once doesn’t help, it goes back to off. It takes several times to click on it to make in stable on, then sometimes it doesn’t detect any network, so it’s necessary to toggle off, and the issue appears again (impossible to toggle on with one single click) the WiFi is off, and the button to toggle it on is greyed out. After tapping on it with the finger several time, it gets activated (still off but not with possibility of toggling it on), and, as above, manage to run it is time consuming while joining a network for first time, the WiFi turns off (and, as above, requires multiple attempts to get back running).

All in all, if I go in a place without mobile connection is basically impossible to use the phone. Every 5 min I need to reconnect trying to tap on the WiFi button several and several times. This happens with multiple networks and makes the WiFi usability impossible. The problem was already with the original iOS, and didn’t improve when installing the 12 this year.

Solution: There’s probably a unique bug or app that causes the problem. To fix it, follow our suggestions below.

Solution 1: Reset network settings

There may be some configuration issues with your network settings. To bring all network settings to defaults, you can reset them with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings to open the app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Reset Network Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the device password.
  6. Confirm action.

Solution 2: Reset all settings

If resetting your iPhone’s network settings won’t help, the next step is to clear all settings. When you reset all settings on your iPhone, all customized settings are restored to default values. Personal data including sound settings, display settings, network settings, and other custom settings won’t be affected though. Follow these steps to reset all settings on your new iPhone:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device.
  6. Tap the option to Reset All Settings to confirm action.
  7. Wait for a few minutes until the reset and reboot processes are finished.

Solution 3: Wipe the phone (factory reset)

If wifi is still a problem at this point, you should consider reverting all software settings to defaults. Unlike the previous troubleshooting step, this one also deletes all user data so your device’s software environment will be in its factory state. This also deletes all apps, potentially eliminating the app causing the bug. To factory reset your iPhone X:

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device to continue.
  6. Tap the option to confirm action.
  7. Set up your phone as a new device (don’t restore from backup) and check how wifi works.

Solution 4: Check your apps

If wifi works properly after a factory reset, you can re-install the apps. At this stage, the problem may return if one of the apps is causing it. If this happens, do another round of factory reset and use the process of elimination to identify the problem app. There’s no direct way to know which of your apps is causing the problem so you’ll need to exert effort and time to isolating it.

To identify the bad app, you want to install your apps one by one. After every installation, be sure to check for the problem. If you have plenty of apps, this can take some time but this is the only way to do it.

Solution 5: DFU Mode Restore

Wifi may not work properly if there’s a problem with the hardware or with the mini operating system for it (called firmware). To ensure that all firmware on the device are working, you can do a DFU Mode Restore.

  1. Connect your iPhone 8 to your computer using the USB or Lightning cable that comes with it.
  2. Open iTunes on your computer.
  3. Turn off your iPhone 8 as you normally do. In iOS 11, you can turn off your iPhone by going to Settings-> General-> Shut Down menu-> then toggle the slider to the right. Doing so turns off the iPhone.
  4. Press and hold the Side button (Power button) for 3 seconds. Then, press and hold the Volume Down button  while still holding down the Side button. Keep holding both buttons for 10 seconds.
    • If the Apple logo appears, it means that you have held the buttons for too long. If this happens, you need to go back from the very start. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
  5. Release the Side button but keep holding down the Volume Down button for about 5 seconds more.
    • If you are prompted with the Plug into iTunes screen, it means that you have entered Recovery Mode instead. So you’ll need to go back to the very first step and make sure you’re not holding the buttons for so long.
    • If your iPhone 8 screen remains black, that means your device has successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will then prompt you with an alert message saying that it has detected your iPhone and will allow it to be restored. Follow the onscreen instructions to restore your iPhone 8 in iTunes.

Solution 6: Get Apple support

If none of the solutions above work, or if you’ve already tried them before contacting us, then the problem must be beyond your ability to fix. As an end user, you’re only limited to doing basic software solutions. You should send the phone in so an Apple-trained technician can do the needed checks on it.
