iPhone X Freezing and Lagging? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone X is suddenly freezing, stuttering, or lagging after an update—or even randomly without warning—you’re not alone. While it’s a powerful device, the iPhone X isn’t immune to software glitches, rogue apps, or background overloads that can tank performance.
The good news? You can likely fix it yourself without heading to the Apple Store.
Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix an iPhone X that’s freezing or lagging.
1. Check Storage First
Low storage space can dramatically slow down your iPhone.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Make sure you have at least 1–2 GB of free space.
- Delete unused apps, old videos, large messages, or offload heavy apps like games or media tools.
2. Restart or Force Restart Your iPhone X
Sometimes all it takes is a fresh reboot.
To restart normally:
- Press and hold Power + Volume Up/Down.
- Slide to power off.
- Wait 30 seconds, then hold Power to turn it back on.
To force restart:
- Quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
3. Update iOS to the Latest Version
Apple regularly pushes updates that patch bugs and optimize performance.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
Make sure your battery is charged and you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
4. Clear Background Apps and Monitor Battery Usage
Too many open apps can cause system strain.
- Swipe up and hold from the bottom of the screen.
- Swipe up on each app to close them.
Then check battery-hungry apps:
- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage.
- Look for apps using excessive battery in the background.
- Uninstall or reinstall any apps that look suspicious or heavy.
5. Reset All Settings
If your iPhone started lagging after a recent update, it might be due to system setting conflicts.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- This resets Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and system preferences—but won’t delete your data.
6. Factory Reset (Erase All Content and Settings)
If your iPhone X is still lagging or freezing:
⚠️ Back up your data to iCloud or iTunes first.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow the prompts to wipe your device and start fresh.
Set up the phone as new and see if the problem is gone before restoring your backup.
7. Restore via iTunes (Recovery Mode)
For deep software corruption, restoring through iTunes can help.
- Connect your iPhone X to a computer.
- Open iTunes (or Finder on macOS Catalina+).
- Force restart your iPhone and enter Recovery Mode.
- When prompted, select Restore.
This reinstalls the system software completely.
Still Freezing? It Could Be Hardware-Related
If your iPhone has been dropped or exposed to water, physical or liquid damage may be the culprit.
Visit an Apple Store or authorized service center for a hardware diagnostic. If your iPhone is still under warranty, you might be eligible for a repair or replacement.
