iPhone X Keeps Crashing or Shutting Down After iOS 11.4.1? Here’s How to Fix It
Even a high-performance phone like the iPhone X isn’t immune to bugs—especially after an iOS update. If your device started crashing, rebooting randomly, or shutting down without warning after updating to iOS 11.4.1, don’t panic. This issue is more common than you might think, and there are several ways to get things back on track.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to fix random crashes and shutdowns on your iPhone X.
1. Check for Pending App Updates
Apps that aren’t updated may crash frequently or conflict with iOS, which can cause system-wide problems.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then scroll to see available updates.
- Tap Update All, or update individual apps.
Once done, restart your iPhone and check for improvements.
2. Force Restart Your iPhone X
This is the fastest way to flush out background glitches without affecting your data.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo, then release.
If it was a temporary software hiccup, this might fix it right away.
3. Check and Manage Storage
Even with 64GB of storage, space can run low fast—especially if apps or system files go rogue.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- See how much space is left and check for unusually large apps or system usage.
- Delete unused apps, old messages, photos, or large videos.
Try to maintain at least 2–5 GB of free space for optimal performance.
4. Reset All Settings
If the update altered settings that are now clashing with your system, resetting them could help.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted.
- Confirm the reset.
This won’t delete your data but will reset Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and system preferences.
5. Restore via iTunes (Standard or Recovery Mode)
If the problem is deeper, use iTunes to restore your iPhone and start fresh.
Standard Restore:
- Connect your iPhone X to your computer and open iTunes or Finder.
- Select your device and choose Restore iPhone.
- Follow on-screen prompts to reinstall iOS.
Recovery Mode Restore:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Do a force restart but keep holding the Side button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
- On your computer, choose Restore when prompted.
⚠️ Both methods will erase your device. Make sure to back up first.
6. DFU Mode Restore (Last Resort)
DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode does a deeper restore than recovery mode.
This should only be used if other steps fail. Full instructions are on our [iPhone X Troubleshooting Page].
Still Not Fixed? Time for a Hardware Check
If your iPhone still crashes or shuts down:
- It may be a hardware issue (like battery damage or logic board failure).
- Visit an Apple Store or authorized service provider for a diagnostic.
- If you’re under warranty or have AppleCare, repairs may be covered.
