iPhone X Won’t Update via OTA? Here’s How to Fix It

Trying to update your iPhone X but nothing’s happening? Whether the update won’t download, install, or even appear, this kind of issue can be frustrating — especially when you’re trying to get the latest iOS features and security patches.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to fix iPhone X software update problems when updating over the air (OTA).

Step 1: Turn Wi-Fi Off and Back On

A flaky connection is one of the most common reasons why updates fail to download.

  • Go to Settings → Wi-Fi.
  • Turn Wi-Fi off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and try checking for the update again via Settings → General → Software Update.

Already downloaded the update but can’t install it?

  • Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
  • Find the iOS update in the list and tap to delete it.
  • Then go back to Software Update and try downloading it again.

Step 2: Restart or Force Restart Your iPhone

Glitches in the system or background apps can block updates. A reboot helps.

Soft Restart:

  • Hold the Side button + Volume Up or Down.
  • Slide to power off.
  • After 30 seconds, turn it back on by holding the Side button.

Force Restart:

  • Press and quickly release Volume Up.
  • Press and quickly release Volume Down.
  • Hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Step 3: Free Up Storage Space

Not enough space = update won’t install.

  • Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
  • Check how much free space is available.
  • Delete unused apps, large message threads, or videos/photos to make room.

You can also use Apple’s suggestions under the Recommendations section in iPhone Storage to quickly offload unnecessary items.

Step 4: Reset All Settings

Sometimes system settings or restrictions block OTA updates.

  • Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

This won’t erase your data, but it will reset all Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and general system settings back to default.

Step 5: Update Using iTunes on a Computer

Still can’t update via Wi-Fi? Try a manual update using iTunes.

  1. Connect your iPhone X to a computer using a Lightning cable.
  2. Launch iTunes (or Finder if you’re on macOS Catalina or later).
  3. Select your iPhone and go to the Summary tab.
  4. Click Check for Update.
  5. If an update is found, click Download and Update.
  6. Follow the prompts and enter your passcode if needed.

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed first.

Still Not Working?

  • Check Apple’s system status: Go to Apple’s support site to see if the update server is experiencing issues.
  • Contact your carrier: If your iPhone is locked or carrier-specific, it could be blocked from updating without carrier approval.
  • Reach out to Apple Support: They can confirm if your device has a specific issue or if others are reporting the same update failure.
