iPhone SE 3 Screen Flickering? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone SE 3 (2022) screen is flickering, flashing, or behaving erratically, you’re not alone. This issue can stem from a buggy app, system glitch, or even a display setting misfire. The good news? If it’s software-related, there’s a good chance you can fix it yourself without a trip to the Apple Store.
Try the steps below to stabilize your screen.
1. Restart or Force Restart Your iPhone
Sometimes, your iPhone just needs a fresh start.
Soft restart:
- Press and hold the Side button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then press the Side button again to turn it back on.
Force restart (if screen is unresponsive or flickering badly):
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
2. Check for App Issues
If flickering happens only in certain apps, that app could be the culprit.
Try this:
- Go to App Store > Your Profile > Update All to make sure all apps are up to date.
- If the issue started after installing a specific app, delete or offload the app under Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Offloading an app removes it but keeps its data, in case you want to reinstall it later.
3. Free Up Storage Space
A nearly full storage can slow your iPhone and affect display performance.
To check and clean up:
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Delete unused apps, old messages, large videos, or other unnecessary files.
Aim to keep at least 10–15% of your storage free for best performance.
4. Install Any Pending iOS Updates
If this issue started after an update — or hasn’t been patched yet — installing the latest iOS version might fix it.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If available, tap Download and Install.
Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery or is charging.
5. Reset All Settings
This won’t delete your data, but it will erase saved Wi-Fi networks, VPNs, accessibility tweaks, and display settings — which may resolve the flickering.
How to reset:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
Your iPhone will reboot. You’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure preferences.
6. Tweak Display Settings
Certain visual features can cause flickering on some iPhones.
Try turning off these options:
- Auto-Brightness:
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, then turn off Auto-Brightness. - Reduce Transparency:
In the same menu, toggle on Reduce Transparency to lighten system effects and possibly stabilize visuals. - Reduce White Point:
If your screen looks too bright before flickering, lower this setting under Display & Text Size.
7. Try a Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If none of the above works, a factory reset can clear deeply embedded system errors — but it will erase all your data.
Back up your iPhone first, then:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow the prompts to fully reset and set up your iPhone as new.
8. Still Flickering? It Could Be Hardware
If your iPhone SE 3 has ever been dropped or exposed to liquid, hardware damage — like a faulty display connector or backlight — could be to blame.
Next steps:
- Remove your case and screen protector — a tight case could be affecting screen contact.
- Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider for a hardware check.
- If the phone is under warranty or AppleCare+, you may be eligible for a free repair or replacement.
