Just updated your iPhone 7 to iOS 11.3.1 and now there’s no sound? You’re not alone — several users have reported audio problems after installing this update. Whether it’s a glitchy speaker or your phone just refuses to play sound, this guide walks you through simple fixes to get the audio working again.
Restart Your iPhone 7
Post-update glitches happen. A soft reset is often the quickest way to flush out temporary bugs.
Here’s how to do a standard restart:
- Hold the Power button until Slide to Power Off appears.
- Slide to shut the phone down.
- After about 30 seconds, hold the Power button again until you see the Apple logo.
Or force restart it like this:
- Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.
- Keep holding for about 10–20 seconds until the Apple logo shows up.
Once your phone’s back on, check the sound again.
Flip the Ringer Switch Off and On
Sometimes your iPhone just needs a little nudge. The silent switch on the side might’ve glitched or got stuck in silent mode.
Try this:
- Flip the Ringer switch (on the left side of the phone) to turn Silent Mode on.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Flip it off again.
Then press the Volume Up button to raise the volume and test if sound comes back.
Reset All Settings
Updates can sometimes mess with your iPhone’s settings, including audio. Resetting all settings puts everything back to factory defaults — but without deleting your apps or data.
To reset all settings:
- Go to Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted.
- Confirm to reset.
Once done, reconnect to Wi-Fi and test your audio again.
Restore or Reset Using iTunes
If your iPhone still has no sound, it might need a full iOS restore. You’ll need a computer with the latest version of iTunes.
Option 1: Factory Reset via iPhone Settings
- Go to Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
This wipes everything — so back up first.
Option 2: Restore via iTunes in Recovery Mode
- Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes.
- Force restart your iPhone:
- Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons.
- Keep holding even after the Apple logo, until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
- In iTunes, choose Restore.
Let the restore finish and set up your iPhone again.
Option 3: DFU Mode Restore (Advanced)
- Connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Hold Power + Volume Down for 8 seconds.
- Let go of Power but keep holding Volume Down until iTunes detects your device.
- The screen should stay black — that’s how you know it’s in DFU mode.
Use iTunes to restore iOS from there.
