If your iPhone 6s can’t send iMessages, gets stuck on “Waiting for Activation,” or refuses to work properly in the Messages app, you’re not alone. iMessage problems are pretty common and usually tied to network issues, outdated settings, or software bugs. The good news? You can usually fix it yourself with a few quick steps.
1. Update iOS to the Latest Version
Bugs affecting iMessage often get resolved in software updates.
To check for updates:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, download and install it.
2. Check for Carrier Settings Update
Carrier settings help your iPhone connect properly to your mobile network.
To check:
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- If there’s a prompt to update carrier settings, tap Update.
Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
3. Make Sure You’re Connected to the Internet
iMessage requires Wi-Fi or cellular data. If you’re not connected, messages won’t send.
- Check Settings > Wi-Fi and confirm you’re connected.
- Or go to Settings > Cellular and make sure Cellular Data is turned on.
Also, ensure MMS and Group Messaging are enabled if needed:
- Go to Settings > Messages and turn on MMS Messaging and Group Messaging (if available).
4. Double Check Recipient Details
Sometimes it’s just a typo.
- Make sure the phone number or email address you’re using is correct.
- Try deleting the conversation and starting fresh.
5. Confirm iMessage Is Set Up Properly
To check setup:
- Go to Settings > Messages.
- Make sure iMessage is turned ON.
Then:
- Tap Send & Receive.
- Ensure your Apple ID and phone number are listed and selected under:
- “You can receive iMessages to and reply from”
- “Start new conversations from”
If your phone number isn’t listed, try signing in again with your Apple ID.
6. Reset iMessage and Network Settings
This combo fix often resolves stubborn iMessage issues.
To do it:
- Go to Settings > Messages and turn iMessage OFF.
- Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Note: This deletes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords.
- Reboot your iPhone.
- Turn iMessage back ON in Settings > Messages.
7. Fix iMessage Activation Issues (e.g., “Waiting for Activation”)
Incorrect time settings can block iMessage activation.
To fix it:
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Enable Set Automatically.
Then:
- Turn iMessage OFF and ON again in Settings > Messages.
8. Resend or Send as Text Message
If a message fails to send:
- Tap the red exclamation mark next to it.
- Choose Try Again or Send as Text Message.
Note: Sending as text may use your carrier’s SMS service (could incur charges).
9. Delete and Restart Group Messages
Group iMessages glitch? Start fresh.
To delete and restart:
- Open Messages.
- Swipe left on the group chat and tap Delete.
- Start a new conversation with the same contacts.
10. Enable Emoji Keyboard (If Missing)
No emojis? You may need to turn the keyboard back on.
To enable:
- Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard > Emoji.
11. Block Spam or Unwanted iMessages
If you’re getting messages from unknown or spammy sources:
To filter unknown senders:
- Go to Settings > Messages.
- Toggle on Filter Unknown Senders.
To block a contact:
- Open the message thread.
- Tap the contact > Info > Block this Caller.
Still Not Working? Contact Apple or Your Carrier
If you’ve tried everything and iMessage still doesn’t work, the issue may be with your account or hardware. Contact Apple Support or your carrier for further help.
