Gmail App Not Working on iPhone 11 Pro? Here’s How to Fix It

Gmail is one of the most reliable email apps for iPhone, but it’s not immune to bugs or occasional glitches. If your Gmail app isn’t loading, syncing, or letting you send and receive emails on your iPhone 11 Pro, there are several simple steps you can take to get it back up and running.

Here’s how to troubleshoot the Gmail app when it stops working on your iPhone.

1. Force Close the Gmail App

Sometimes apps get stuck in a glitchy state if they’ve been running too long in the background.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your screen and pause in the middle.
  • Swipe side to side until you find Gmail.
  • Swipe the Gmail window up to close it completely.
  • Then re-open the app and see if it responds.

2. Restart Your iPhone

A quick reboot can flush out temporary software hiccups that might be interfering with Gmail.

  • Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button.
  • When you see the slider, drag it to turn off your iPhone.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then press the Side button again to turn it back on.

3. Check Content & Privacy Restrictions

Restrictions may be preventing Gmail from working properly.

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • If enabled, enter your Screen Time passcode.
  • Toggle Content & Privacy Restrictions OFF.

Or, if you want to keep restrictions enabled:

  • Tap Allowed Apps and make sure Gmail is toggled ON.

4. Update the Gmail App

Outdated versions of Gmail can crash or fail to sync properly.

  • Open the App Store.
  • Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  • Scroll to Available Updates.
  • Tap Update next to Gmail — or tap Update All.

Restart your iPhone afterward to apply any bug fixes.

5. Update iOS

If Gmail issues started after a recent system update or you haven’t updated in a while, a fresh iOS patch might help.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If there’s an update available, tap Download and Install.

6. Reset Network Settings

If Gmail won’t sync or load and your internet is otherwise working fine, try this:

⚠️ You’ll lose saved Wi-Fi passwords.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  • Tap Reset Network Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi after your iPhone reboots and check Gmail again.

7. Remove and Re-Add Your Gmail Account

Sometimes your email account can become corrupted. Re-adding it usually clears things up.

  • Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  • Tap your Gmail account.
  • Tap Delete Account.
  • Then go back to Accounts > Add Account > Google, and sign in again.

8. Delete and Reinstall the Gmail App

Still stuck? A fresh install may solve it.

  • Tap and hold the Gmail app icon on your home screen.
  • Tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete.
  • Open the App Store, search for Gmail, then download and reinstall it.
  • Log back in and test sending/receiving emails.

Still Not Working?

If none of these steps worked, try:

  • Logging into Gmail via mail.google.com to check if the problem is account- or device-specific.
  • Checking Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard for service outages.
  • Using Apple’s built-in Mail app as a temporary solution.
