iMessage Not Working on iPad Air 3? Here’s How to Fix It
iMessage is a great way to send texts, photos, videos, and more — but when it suddenly stops working on your iPad Air 3, it’s frustrating. Whether messages won’t send, won’t activate, or just never show up, this guide will walk you through the steps to get iMessage back up and running.
Check Apple’s System Status First
Before diving into fixes, make sure the problem isn’t on Apple’s end:
- Go to Apple’s System Status page
- Look for iMessage. If the dot is green, the service is up. If it’s yellow or gray, it’s a temporary server issue — just wait it out.
1. Force Close the Messages App
Glitches in the Messages app can cause iMessage to bug out.
- Double press the Home button to view recently used apps.
- Swipe up on the Messages app to close it.
- Also close other running apps while you’re at it.
- Relaunch Messages and try sending an iMessage again.
2. Reboot Your iPad (Soft Reset)
A simple restart can often fix random messaging issues.
- Press and hold the Top (Power) button until the slider appears.
- Slide to power off.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold the Top button again to restart.
- Open Messages and test iMessage.
3. Set Date & Time Automatically
Incorrect time settings can prevent iMessage from working properly.
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Toggle Set Automatically to ON.
This ensures your iPad syncs time correctly with Apple’s servers.
4. Make Sure iMessage is Enabled in iCloud
Messages should be synced through your iCloud account.
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Scroll down and toggle ON Messages.
- Then go to Settings > Messages and turn iMessage OFF, wait a few seconds, then turn it back ON.
- Wait for iMessage to activate and try again.
5. Install the Latest iOS & Carrier Settings
Software bugs can mess with messaging — and updates often include fixes.
- To update iOS:
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates. - To check for carrier updates:
Go to Settings > General > About and wait a few seconds — if an update is available, you’ll see a prompt.
Restart your iPad after installing any updates.
6. Reset Network Settings
Corrupted Wi-Fi or network settings can block iMessage from working.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
This erases saved Wi-Fi and VPN settings, so reconnect to your network afterward.
7. Sign Out of iMessage and Sign Back In
If there’s an authentication glitch, re-signing in can fix it.
- Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
- Tap your Apple ID and select Sign Out.
- Toggle iMessage OFF, restart your iPad, then go back and turn it ON.
- Sign back in with your Apple ID.
Try sending an iMessage afterward.
Still Not Working?
If iMessage is still broken after all these steps:
- Call your carrier to make sure iMessage is supported and active on your account.
- Or contact Apple Support to check for deeper issues with your Apple ID or iCloud services.
