Just updated your iPhone 7 to iOS 11.4 and now Instagram keeps crashing or freezing? You’re not alone. Plenty of users have reported app issues after the update — and Instagram seems to be one of the top offenders. If your app is acting up, here’s how to fix it and get back to scrolling without interruptions.
Check Your Internet Connection First
Before anything else, make sure your iPhone has a stable internet connection. Instagram needs a steady Wi-Fi or mobile data signal to work properly. If you’re dealing with slow speeds, dropped connections, or no internet at all, fix that first — the app might not be the real problem.
Close Instagram and Clear Background Apps
Sometimes the app just needs a fresh start.
Here’s how to force close Instagram:
- Press the Home button twice quickly to bring up the app switcher.
- Swipe up on the Instagram preview to close it.
- Do the same for other apps running in the background.
After that, reopen Instagram and see if it works normally again.
Restart Your iPhone 7
Still crashing? A quick reboot might clear out minor update bugs.
To restart:
- Press and hold the Power button until Slide to power off appears.
- Drag the slider and wait about 30 seconds.
- Press and hold Power again until the Apple logo appears.
If the screen is frozen, try a force restart:
- Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
- Release both when the Apple logo appears.
Reset All Settings
If the update messed with your phone’s system settings, a reset can fix that without wiping your data.
To reset all settings:
- Go to Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted, then confirm.
Your iPhone will reboot with all settings back to default — but your files, apps, and photos will stay intact.
Update Instagram (and Other Apps)
App developers often push out compatibility fixes after major iOS updates. If Instagram hasn’t been updated yet, it might not play well with iOS 11.4.
To check for app updates:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap Updates at the bottom.
- Find Instagram and tap Update.
- Tap Update All if you want to update every app at once.
Once the update installs, reboot your iPhone and launch Instagram again.
Delete Instagram and Reinstall It
If none of the above worked, Instagram might need a clean install.
To delete the app:
- Tap and hold the Instagram icon until it jiggles.
- Tap the X in the corner, then tap Delete.
To reinstall:
- Open the App Store and search for Instagram.
- Tap the download icon or Get button.
- Enter your Apple ID password if needed.
Once it’s installed, sign back in and see if the crashes are gone.
