iBooks Not Working on iPhone? Here’s How to Fix It
Can’t open Apple Books (iBooks) or getting stuck while trying to read your downloaded titles? Whether it’s freezing, crashing, or not syncing your library, there are several fixes you can try before giving up on your digital bookshelf. Here’s how to troubleshoot and get iBooks working again on your iPhone.
1. Check Your Internet Connection
iBooks needs a stable internet connection to sync your books and download new titles.
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and toggle it off and back on.
- Or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to see if the issue is connection-specific.
- Try opening a website in Safari to confirm you’re online.
2. Update iOS to the Latest Version
An outdated iOS version can cause bugs in apps like iBooks.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Download and install any available updates.
- Restart your phone afterward.
This can resolve bugs and improve app compatibility.
3. Force Quit and Reopen Apple Books
Sometimes the app just needs a fresh start.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause.
- Find the Books app, then swipe it up to force close.
- Wait a few seconds, then reopen it.
This clears temporary glitches that may be causing the issue.
4. Toggle iCloud Sync for Books
Resyncing iCloud can fix issues with your library not loading or syncing.
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud.
- Scroll down to Books and toggle it off, wait a few seconds, then toggle it back on.
This refreshes the cloud connection and syncs your data again.
5. Sign Out of iTunes & App Store
If something’s wrong with your Apple ID session, logging out can help.
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Media & Purchases (or iTunes & App Store on older iOS).
- Tap your Apple ID > Sign Out.
- Wait a minute or two, then sign back in.
6. Delete and Reinstall Apple Books
Corrupted app data can cause iBooks to misbehave.
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Books.
- Tap Offload App, then reinstall it from the App Store.
- Open the app again and re-download any books if needed.
7. Reset Network Settings
If iBooks won’t load online content or sync via iCloud, resetting network settings can help.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- This clears Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings, so be ready to reconnect.
8. Restore Your iPhone (Last Resort)
If all else fails, you can do a clean restore via iTunes or Finder:
- Back up your iPhone first using iCloud or a computer.
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac/PC.
- Open Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes.
- Put your iPhone into recovery mode, then click Restore.
This wipes the device and installs a fresh copy of iOS.
