iPhone SE Stuck on Apple Logo or Boot Loop? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone SE is stuck on the Apple logo, black screen, or keeps restarting in a boot loop after an update, you’re not alone. This kind of issue usually points to a system-level glitch—often caused by a failed iOS update, corrupted data, or a serious app crash. Luckily, there are several ways to troubleshoot and (hopefully) fix it yourself.
Try the methods below—from the simplest to the most advanced—until your iPhone gets back to normal.
Force Restart Your iPhone SE
This is the first thing to try anytime your iPhone freezes or gets stuck.
- Press and hold both the Home button and the Power (Sleep/Wake) button at the same time.
- Keep holding both buttons for at least 10–20 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
This won’t delete your data—it just forces your iPhone to reboot. It often works for crashes, boot loops, and unresponsive screens.
Try Restoring from a Backup via iTunes
If a force restart doesn’t work, the next step is to restore your iPhone using iTunes (or Finder on macOS Catalina and later).
- Connect your iPhone SE to your computer using a Lightning cable.
- Open iTunes (or Finder).
- Wait for your iPhone to appear in the list of devices. Click on it.
- Select Restore Backup.
- Choose the most recent backup and click Restore.
- Let the process complete and see if your iPhone boots up normally.
If iTunes doesn’t detect your iPhone, try using a different cable or USB port.
Use Recovery Mode to Reinstall iOS
If restoring a backup doesn’t help, you’ll need to put your iPhone into Recovery Mode and reinstall the OS.
- Connect your iPhone SE to your computer and open iTunes.
- While connected, press and hold both the Home and Power buttons.
- Keep holding until you see the Connect to iTunes screen (don’t let go when the Apple logo first appears).
- iTunes will prompt you to either Update or Restore. Choose Update first to try reinstalling iOS without wiping your data.
- If Update fails or gets stuck, go back and choose Restore instead.
If the process takes longer than 15 minutes, your iPhone may exit recovery mode. Just repeat the steps to re-enter it.
Put Your iPhone into DFU Mode
If nothing else works, a DFU (Device Firmware Update) restore is your last resort. It’s a deeper restore method that bypasses the regular bootloader.
⚠️ This will erase everything on your iPhone, so only use it if other steps fail and you’ve backed up your data (or you’re okay with starting fresh).
- Plug your iPhone SE into your computer.
- Press and hold both the Power and Home buttons for exactly 10 seconds.
- After 10 seconds, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button for another 10 seconds.
- If your screen stays completely black, you’ve entered DFU mode.
- iTunes will detect a device in recovery mode. Follow the prompts to Restore your iPhone.
If you see the Apple logo or the recovery mode screen instead of a black display, it means you didn’t enter DFU mode successfully. Just try again—it can take a few attempts.
Still Stuck? Contact Apple Support
If DFU mode doesn’t fix the issue or you can’t get your phone recognized by iTunes at all, the problem might be hardware-related. At this point, it’s best to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for diagnostics.
