iPhone Internet Slow? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPhone’s internet feels like it’s crawling — web pages taking forever to load, videos constantly buffering, or apps stuck trying to update — you’re not alone. Whether you’re on Wi-Fi or cellular data, slow internet is frustrating. But good news: most of the time, it’s fixable with a few quick tweaks.

Here’s how to troubleshoot and speed up your iPhone’s internet connection.

1. Restart Your iPhone

Sometimes a simple reboot is all it takes.

For iPhone X and later:

  • Press and hold the Side button + Volume Up/Down until the power slider appears.
  • Drag the slider to power off, then hold the Side button again to turn it back on.

For iPhone 8 and earlier:

  • Hold the Home + Side button until the Apple logo appears.

2. Reset Network Settings

This clears out corrupted network data that could be slowing your internet.

To reset:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  • Tap Reset Network Settings.
  • Enter your passcode to confirm.

Note: You’ll lose saved Wi-Fi passwords, so be ready to reconnect.

3. Update Carrier Settings

Outdated carrier settings can mess with mobile data performance.

  • Go to Settings > General > About.
  • If an update is available, you’ll see a prompt. Follow the instructions.

Then, restart your phone.

4. Turn Off Background App Refresh

Apps constantly updating in the background can eat up bandwidth.

  • Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
  • Tap Off or disable it for select apps only.

5. Forget and Rejoin Your Wi-Fi Network

Refreshing your Wi-Fi connection can help.

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the (i) next to your network and select Forget This Network.
  3. Reconnect by selecting the network and entering the password again.

6. Update Your Router Firmware

Check your router’s brand website for firmware updates. An outdated router can bottleneck your speeds even if your iPhone is fine.

7. Disable VPN (If You Use One)

VPNs slow down your connection by routing your data through other servers.

  • Go to Settings > VPN and toggle it OFF.
  • Test your connection again to see if it improves.

8. Power Cycle Your Modem and Router

A fresh restart of your network hardware can make a huge difference.

  1. Unplug your modem and router.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Plug them back in and wait for them to fully restart.

9. Clear Safari Cache and Data

Too much cached data can slow down browsing.

  • Go to Settings > Safari.
  • Tap Clear History and Website Data.

Note: You’ll be signed out of websites.

10. Move Closer to Your Router

Wi-Fi signals weaken with distance and obstacles like walls.

  • Move your iPhone closer to the router to improve signal and speed.

11. Contact Your Carrier or ISP

If nothing helps and your internet is still slow:

  • Your carrier or internet provider may be having network issues.
  • Call them to check for outages or throttling on your plan.

By trying these steps, you can usually solve sluggish iPhone internet issues without needing professional help.
