iPad Pro Won’t Turn On? Here’s How to Fix It

If your iPad Pro won’t power on and shows no signs of life—no Apple logo, no backlight, no response—it could be a dead battery, a firmware crash, or a hardware failure. Before you panic, try these quick fixes to rule out common problems that don’t require a trip to the repair shop.

1. Force Restart Your iPad Pro

Most of the time, an unresponsive iPad is just dealing with a firmware crash, not a dead device. A force restart can bring it back to life.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Then, press and hold the Power (Top) button until you see the Apple logo.

This may take 10–20 seconds of holding. If nothing happens the first time, try again—you may need a couple of attempts to get the timing right.

2. Charge It for At Least an Hour

If the battery is completely drained, your iPad won’t turn on until it has enough juice. Apple devices usually power on once the battery has enough charge.

Try this:

  1. Plug your iPad Pro into a wall outlet using an Apple-certified charger and cable.
  2. Let it charge for at least 1 hour—don’t rush it.
  3. After a few minutes, you should see the charging screen.
  4. If you see a low battery or plug icon, make sure the cable, power adapter, and charging port are clean and undamaged.
  5. Still nothing? Try a different USB cable, charging brick, or wall outlet.

Pro tip: While it’s plugged in, do another force restart. If the firmware crashed while the battery was low, it might only respond after getting power.

3. Still Nothing? It Might Be a Hardware Issue

If your iPad Pro won’t turn on even after charging and force restarting, the problem could be hardware-related:

  • A failed battery, logic board, or display
  • Liquid damage or drop impact
  • Faulty charging port

At this point, it’s best to schedule a Genius Bar appointment or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If your iPad is under warranty or covered by AppleCare+, repairs may be free or discounted.
