iPhone XR Cellular Update Failed Error — How to Fix It

If your iPhone XR suddenly shows a “Cellular Update Failed” error, it means your device can’t properly connect to your carrier’s network. This often affects your ability to call, text, or use mobile data. It’s usually a software or SIM-related issue and can be fixed with a few simple steps. Here’s what to try.

1. Restart Your iPhone XR

A quick restart often clears out minor system glitches.

  • Hold the Side button + Volume Up or Down.
  • When “slide to power off” appears, drag the slider.
  • After the device turns off, hold the Side button again to power it back on.

2. Install iOS or Carrier Settings Updates

Updates may contain fixes for known cellular bugs.

To check for an iOS update:

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Download and install any available update.

To check for a carrier settings update:

  • Go to Settings > General > About.
  • Stay on that screen for a few seconds.
  • If a prompt appears, follow it to install the update.

3. Reset Network Settings

This clears out problematic settings related to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VPN, and cellular.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  • Tap Reset Network Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

Your iPhone will reboot, and default network settings will be restored.

4. Reinsert the SIM Card

Sometimes reseating the SIM can fix detection or signal issues.

  • Power off your iPhone XR.
  • Use a SIM ejector tool or paperclip to open the SIM tray (right side).
  • Remove the SIM card, inspect it for damage, then reinsert it properly.
  • Push the tray back in and turn your phone on.

If the SIM is scratched or damaged, ask your carrier for a replacement.

5. Factory Reset Your iPhone XR

Only try this if all else fails.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

⚠️ This will wipe your phone, so back up your data first via iCloud or iTunes.

You can also restore your iPhone using iTunes/Finder on a computer for a clean reinstall of iOS.

If the error persists even after a full reset, it may be a network-side issue or a hardware fault. Contact your carrier for support or book an appointment with Apple Support to check for deeper hardware problems.
