Instagram Frozen or Not Working on iPhone? Try These 12 Easy Fixes
Instagram freezing or refusing to load on your iPhone is frustrating—especially when you’re just trying to scroll through your feed or post a Story. Whether it’s due to a buggy app update, poor network connection, or something deeper in iOS, there are several things you can do to get it running again.
Here are 12 simple fixes to try when Instagram is stuck, frozen, or unresponsive on your iPhone.
1. Check Your Internet Connection
Instagram needs a strong and stable connection to work properly.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi or Cellular.
- Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- You can also toggle Airplane Mode on and off to refresh the network.
2. Force Quit and Reopen Instagram
Sometimes the app just needs a restart.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-tap the Home button on older iPhones).
- Find Instagram in the app switcher and swipe it up to close.
- Reopen Instagram from your Home Screen.
3. Update Instagram in the App Store
An outdated version might be causing crashes or freezes.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon at the top right.
- Scroll down to Instagram and tap Update, if available.
- Or tap Update All to refresh all your apps.
4. Make Sure iOS is Up to Date
App issues can stem from an outdated operating system.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install if an update is available.
5. Restart Your iPhone
A simple restart can resolve all kinds of weird app behavior.
- Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
6. Delete and Reinstall Instagram
Corrupted app data can cause freezing—reinstalling often fixes it.
- Tap and hold the Instagram icon, then tap Remove App > Delete App.
- Go back to the App Store and reinstall Instagram.
7. Reset Network Settings
If your network settings are corrupted, this can cause app issues.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords, so make sure you know them first.
8. Free Up iPhone Storage
Low storage can make apps sluggish or unresponsive.
- Head to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Delete unused apps, large videos, or other junk files to free up space.
9. Turn Off Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode can restrict background activity.
- Go to Settings > Battery.
- Toggle off Low Power Mode and check if Instagram starts working.
10. Log Out and Log Back Into Instagram
Sometimes your account session needs a refresh.
- Open Instagram, go to your profile, then tap the menu icon > Settings and Privacy.
- Scroll down and tap Log Out.
- Log back in and see if the issue is fixed.
11. Contact Instagram Support
If nothing has worked, report the issue directly to Instagram.
- Go to Settings > Help > Report a Problem inside the app (if it opens at all).
- Describe when the freezing happens and include screenshots if possible.
12. Factory Reset Your iPhone (Last Resort)
Only do this if nothing else works and you’ve backed up your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Set up your iPhone as new and reinstall Instagram from scratch.
