How to Fix iMessage Not Working on iPhone XR

If iMessage isn’t working on your iPhone XR — whether it won’t activate, messages aren’t sending, or you’re not receiving texts — it’s usually caused by a misconfiguration, poor connection, or a software glitch. Here’s how to troubleshoot and get iMessage working again.

Check Your Basics First

Before diving into deeper fixes, do the following:

  • Make sure Wi-Fi or Cellular Data is turned on.
  • Go to Settings > General > Date & Time, and turn on Set Automatically.
  • Turn off FaceTime temporarily (Settings > FaceTime), just to rule out any interference.

Reinsert Your SIM Card

Sometimes iMessage issues are tied to SIM card problems. Give this a try:

  1. Power off your iPhone XR.
  2. Use a SIM eject tool (or paperclip) to pop out the SIM tray.
  3. Take out the SIM card and inspect it for damage.
  4. Reinsert the SIM carefully and push the tray back in.
  5. Turn your phone back on and test iMessage.

If your SIM is damaged, contact your carrier for a replacement.

Force Close and Restart the Messages App

Glitches in the Messages app can prevent iMessage from working. Here’s how to refresh it:

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause.
  2. Find the Messages app in the app switcher.
  3. Swipe up on it to close it.
  4. Restart your iPhone.
  5. Reopen the Messages app and try sending an iMessage.

Turn iMessage Off and Back On

Refreshing the iMessage system itself can solve stubborn issues.

  1. Go to Settings > Messages.
  2. Toggle iMessage off.
  3. Restart your iPhone.
  4. Go back to Settings > Messages and toggle iMessage back on.

Send a test message and see if it goes through.

Disable and Re-Enable Messages in iCloud

This helps fix any account syncing bugs affecting iMessage.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Scroll down and toggle off Messages, then restart your phone.
  5. Go back and toggle Messages on again.

Check Your Send & Receive Settings

Make sure your iPhone knows where to send and receive iMessages.

  1. Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
  2. Confirm your phone number and Apple ID email are listed and checked.
  3. Under “You Can Receive iMessages To and Reply From,” make sure your contact info is correct.

Reset Network Settings

Corrupt or incorrect network settings can break iMessage.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode and confirm.

Your Wi-Fi and cellular settings will reset, so reconnect to your network and test iMessage again.

Factory Reset (If Nothing Else Works)

If iMessage is still broken, a full reset might help — just back up your data first.

  • On the iPhone:
    1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
    2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Or use a computer with iTunes/Finder:
    1. Connect your iPhone via USB.
    2. Open iTunes/Finder, select your device, and choose Restore iPhone.

Once it restarts, set it up as new or restore from backup. Then re-enable iMessage.

Still Not Working? Contact Apple or Your Carrier

If you’ve tried everything and iMessage still refuses to work, it might be a carrier-related issue or something on Apple’s end. Contact your carrier to check your line or reach out to Apple Support for more help.
