iPhone XS Max Keeps Losing Signal? Here’s How to Fix It
Does your iPhone XS Max keep dropping its network connection or constantly show “No Service” or “SOS Only”? If so, you’re not alone. This issue can be frustrating—especially when it affects your ability to call, text, or use mobile data. Thankfully, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and fix it.
Here’s how to stop your iPhone XS Max from losing signal and get your connection back to normal.
1. Restart Your iPhone (Soft Reset)
Sometimes, all your phone needs is a quick reboot to clear out minor glitches.
How to do it:
- Press and hold the Side button + Volume Up or Down until the power slider appears.
- Drag the slider to power off.
- Wait 30 seconds, then press the Side button again to power it back on.
2. Check for Carrier Settings Update
Carrier updates help improve your phone’s ability to connect to your network.
Steps:
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- Wait 10–15 seconds.
- If an update is available, you’ll see a prompt to install it. Tap Update.
3. Update to the Latest iOS Version
Outdated iOS can interfere with signal stability.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install if an update is available.
Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery.
4. Toggle Cellular Settings
Resetting your network connection manually can help.
- Go to Settings > Cellular and toggle Cellular Data OFF and then back ON.
- Then go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection, turn OFF Automatic, and select your carrier manually.
5. Reset Network Settings
This clears corrupted network configurations without affecting personal data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode to confirm.
Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings will be erased, so you’ll need to reconnect manually.
6. Remove and Reinsert SIM Card
Signal problems can stem from a misaligned or faulty SIM card.
- Power off your iPhone.
- Remove the SIM tray using a SIM ejector tool or paperclip.
- Check the SIM card for damage or dust.
- Reinsert it, then power on the phone.
If the SIM looks damaged, contact your carrier for a replacement.
7. Perform a Full iTunes Restore (Advanced)
If all else fails, you might be dealing with deeper system errors. A clean restore may help.
- Connect your iPhone XS Max to a computer using a Lightning cable.
- Open iTunes or Finder (on macOS Catalina and newer).
- Choose Restore iPhone, then follow the prompts.
⚠️ Back up your data first, as this will erase everything on the phone.
8. Still No Fix? Get Support
If your iPhone XS Max continues to lose signal after trying all the above:
- Contact your carrier to check for outages or account issues.
- Visit an Apple Store or authorized service provider to check for hardware defects (antenna damage, logic board issues, etc.).
