iPhone XS Overheating? Here’s How to Fix It

It’s normal for your iPhone XS to get warm while gaming, streaming, or installing updates. But if it’s overheating—especially while idle—something’s wrong. Overheating can lead to sluggish performance, battery drain, and even hardware damage if left unchecked.

If your iPhone XS feels unusually hot and won’t cool down, try the proven steps below to resolve the issue and prevent it from happening again.

🔧 1. Close All Background Apps

Apps left running in the background—especially if they’re buggy or heavy on resources—can push your processor too hard.

How to close background apps:

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
  • Swipe left or right to view open apps.
  • Swipe up on each app to close it.

Then monitor the phone for overheating. If it still runs hot, continue below.

🔁 2. Force Restart the iPhone

A force restart clears out temporary bugs that can cause performance and heat issues.

To force restart your iPhone XS:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

This doesn’t erase your data—it just refreshes the system.

🧹 3. Uninstall or Disable Suspicious Apps

Some third-party apps may misbehave after an update, constantly running in the background and draining power.

To temporarily disable an app:

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • Turn ON restrictions, tap Allowed Apps, and toggle off the app in question.

To uninstall the app:

  • Tap and hold the app icon.
  • Tap the X in the corner, then tap Delete.

If the phone cools down afterward, the app was likely the culprit.

⚙️ 4. Reset All Settings

Incorrect or conflicting settings can strain your device and cause it to overheat.

This won’t delete your data, but it will reset things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and privacy settings.

Steps:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  • Tap Reset All Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

After rebooting, re-enable only the features you need.

🔄 5. Update iOS to the Latest Version

Sometimes, overheating is caused by bugs introduced in a previous update. Apple often releases patches to fix them.

To check for updates:

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If available, tap Download and Install.

Be sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery before starting the update.

🛠️ Still Overheating? Try These Advanced Fixes

If the problem continues:

  • Factory Reset – Wipe your iPhone and start fresh.
  • Recovery Mode Restore – Use iTunes or Finder to fully reinstall iOS.
  • DFU Mode Restore – Perform a deep restore if nothing else works.

⚠️ Back up your data first. These methods erase everything.

📍 When to Contact Apple

If your iPhone XS remains hot after trying everything:

  • A hardware issue (like a damaged battery or logic board) may be to blame.
  • Visit an Apple Store or authorized repair center for inspection.
  • If your phone is still under warranty, repair or replacement may be free.
