iPad Pro Keeps Freezing? Here’s How to Fix It

Is your iPad Pro acting up—freezing randomly, becoming unresponsive, or lagging like crazy? Whether it’s happening while you’re browsing, gaming, or just switching between apps, a freezing iPad can be super frustrating. Good news: most of the time, the issue is fixable without needing a trip to the Apple Store.

Here’s how to troubleshoot and stop your iPad Pro from freezing.

1. Close Unused Apps

Too many apps running in the background can bog down your iPad’s performance.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
  • Swipe up on each app preview to close it.
  • Keep only the essential apps running to reduce memory usage.

2. Check for App Updates

Buggy or outdated apps are a common cause of freezing issues.

  • Open the App Store.
  • Tap your profile icon at the top right.
  • Scroll down and tap Update All (or update specific apps).
  • Reopen your apps and test for freezing.

3. Delete Problematic or Unused Apps

If freezing happens only in certain apps:

  • Tap and hold the app icon until a menu pops up.
  • Tap Remove App, then Delete App.
  • Reinstall it from the App Store, or leave it deleted if you no longer need it.

4. Keep Your iPad Cool

Overheating can cause your iPad to freeze or throttle performance.

  • Don’t use it under direct sunlight or in hot environments.
  • Close power-hungry apps like games or video editors.
  • Let it cool down before using it again if it feels hot to the touch.

5. Update iPadOS

Apple regularly releases updates that fix bugs and performance issues.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Download and install any available update.
  • Restart your iPad afterward.

6. Force Restart Your iPad Pro

This can snap your iPad out of a frozen state.

  • Press and release Volume Up.
  • Press and release Volume Down.
  • Press and hold the Power (Top) button until the Apple logo appears.
  • Release the button and wait for your iPad to restart.

7. Reset All Settings

If the problem continues, try resetting system settings without deleting your data.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset.
  • Tap Reset All Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and confirm.

This clears custom settings (like Wi-Fi networks and keyboard settings) but keeps your data intact.

8. Factory Reset as a Last Resort

Still freezing? A full reset might be necessary.

Important: Back up your iPad to iCloud or your computer first.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad.
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Confirm and follow the prompts.

Set up your iPad as new, or restore from a backup after the reset.

9. Contact Apple Support

If none of these steps work, there could be a hardware issue.

  • Schedule a Genius Bar appointment.
  • Use the Apple Support app or Apple’s website for diagnostics.
  • If you’re under warranty or AppleCare, repairs or replacements may be free.

10. Consider a Replacement

If your iPad Pro is aging or constantly freezing despite every fix, replacing it may be the smartest option.

  • Trade it in at an Apple Store or reseller.
  • Look into refurbished or newer models with updated hardware.
