How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Facebook Account (Step-by-Step)

Need a break from Facebook? Whether you’re trying to focus, protect your privacy, or just hit pause on the digital noise, you can easily deactivate your account temporarily. When you do this, your profile, photos, and posts disappear from public view — but Messenger still works, and you can reactivate anytime by logging back in.

Here’s how to do it in just a few minutes.

What Happens When You Deactivate Facebook

  • Your profile becomes invisible to everyone.
  • People can’t search for you or see your timeline.
  • Your messages in Messenger stay active — you can still chat.
  • You can choose to automatically reactivate after a set number of days (optional).

How to Deactivate Your Facebook Account Temporarily

Step 1: Log In to Your Facebook Account
Go to facebook.com and sign in with your email and password.

Step 2: Open Settings
Click the downward arrow in the top-right corner of the page and select Settings & Privacy > Settings.

Step 3: Go to “Your Facebook Information”
In the left-hand menu, click Your Facebook Information.

Step 4: Choose “Deactivation and Deletion”
Scroll down and click View next to Deactivation and Deletion.

Step 5: Select “Deactivate Account”
Choose Deactivate Account, then click Continue to Account Deactivation.

Step 6: Give a Reason (Optional)
Facebook will ask why you’re leaving. Choose “This is temporary. I’ll be back.” You can also select how many days before your account automatically reactivates (optional).

Step 7: Confirm Deactivation
Click Deactivate, then one more time on Deactivate Now to finalize it.

Want to Reactivate Later?

Just log in to Facebook with your email and password — your profile will be restored just the way you left it.
