Is the Gmail app crashing, freezing, or not loading properly on your iPad Pro? Whether it started after a recent iOS update or seemingly out of nowhere, it’s usually caused by software glitches, app conflicts, or bad data. Fortunately, there are several fixes you can try to get Gmail running smoothly again.
1. Check Your Internet Connection
Before anything else, make sure your iPad Pro is connected to a stable Wi-Fi or cellular network.
- Try opening a webpage in Safari.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular, or restart your router if needed.
If other apps are working fine online but Gmail isn’t, move on to the next steps.
2. Force Quit Gmail and Restart the App
The app may just be glitching temporarily.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause.
- Swipe left or right to locate Gmail.
- Swipe up on the app card to force quit.
- Reopen Gmail from the Home screen.
3. Restart Your iPad Pro
A soft reset clears out memory issues that can cause app instability.
- Press and hold the Top button + Volume button until the power slider appears.
- Slide to power off.
- After 30 seconds, press the Top button again until the Apple logo shows.
Once it boots up, try Gmail again.
4. Update the Gmail App
Outdated versions of Gmail can crash on newer iOS versions.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Scroll to Gmail and tap Update (if available).
After updating, restart your iPad again for good measure.
5. Delete and Reinstall Gmail
If the app is corrupted, reinstalling can often fix it.
To delete:
- Long-press the Gmail app until it jiggles.
- Tap the X icon > Delete.
To reinstall:
- Open the App Store.
- Search for Gmail.
- Tap the Download button to reinstall it.
After reinstalling, sign back in and test the app.
6. Reset All Settings
If Gmail started crashing after a settings change or iOS update, this will help.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
This will not delete your data, but it will reset system settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and permissions.
7. Try the Apple Mail App as a Backup
If Gmail is still acting up, you can temporarily use the built-in Mail app:
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Tap Add Account, then select Google and sign in.
- Use Mail to send/receive Gmail until the issue is resolved.

Sometimes the issue is server-side, especially during outages or sync issues.
- Visit the Gmail Help Center.
- Check Gmail’s status dashboard for server issues.
