Gmail App Keeps Crashing on iPhone 8 Plus? Try These Fixes
If the Gmail app keeps crashing, freezing, or acting glitchy on your iPhone 8 Plus, it’s usually due to a software issue — either with the app itself, your iPhone’s settings, or a network problem. Here’s a full list of fixes to help get Gmail working again.
Force Quit Gmail and Restart Your iPhone
Start simple. If Gmail just started acting up, force quitting the app and restarting your phone might be all it needs.
Force quit Gmail:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
- Find Gmail in the app switcher.
- Swipe it up to close.
Then restart your iPhone:
- Press and hold the Power button until you see the slider.
- Slide to power off.
- After 30 seconds, turn it back on by holding the Power button again.
If your iPhone is frozen:
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo shows up.
Remove Any Old or Unused Email Accounts
Sometimes Gmail glitches out if there are conflicting or corrupted accounts saved on your device.
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts (or Passwords & Accounts on older iOS).
- Tap any email accounts you don’t use anymore.
- Tap Delete Account, then confirm.
Restart your iPhone afterward and test Gmail again.
Update Gmail and iOS
Outdated apps or system software can lead to crashes and bugs.
To update Gmail:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Scroll down to find Gmail and tap Update (or Update All to refresh everything).
To update iOS:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap Download and Install.
Restart your phone after updates are done and see if Gmail is stable.
Reset All Settings
If something got messed up in your iPhone’s configuration, resetting all settings can fix it without wiping your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset All Settings.
- Enter your passcode, then confirm.
Alternatively, you can choose Reset Network Settings if you suspect the issue is related to Wi-Fi or connectivity.
Delete and Reinstall the Gmail App
If the app itself is corrupted, a clean reinstall is your best bet.
- Tap and hold the Gmail icon on your Home screen.
- Tap Remove App > Delete App.
- Go to the App Store, search for Gmail, and reinstall it.
After reinstalling, sign in again and test if it works without crashing.
Still Not Working? Here’s What Else You Can Do
- Try the stock Mail app — it supports Gmail and may run more smoothly on older iPhones.
- Contact Google Support — especially if your account has syncing or security issues.
- Reach out to Apple Support if other apps are crashing too — there could be a deeper iOS bug.
