How to deal with quick battery draining issue on your iPhone 8 Plus [Troubleshooting Guide]

If you sort out all known problems affecting various iOS devices including the new iPhone 8 Plus, battery draining issue emerges likely as the most widespread if not prevalent among other concerns. It’s been an issue since the prior iOS platforms and even with the latest iOS 11 platform. For some reasons, the iPhone battery is adversely affected by most firmware updates Apple has released. As a matter of fact, many users of the new iPhone 8 series and some of those who have just updated to iOS 11 (iOS 11.2, or 11.2.1 in particular) have noticed a serious drain on the battery power.

Fortunately, the hardware is not to blame in this case as it’s apparently associated with the software. That being said, there are still a few things you can try on your end to get your iPhone 8 Plus battery power to last long as it should.

Highlighted below is a rundown of possible solutions and recommended workarounds to deal with rapid battery draining on the iPhone. If you’ve just upgraded to iPhone 8 Plus  or updated to iOS 11, consider giving it a day or so to complete the entire system update implementation and allow your device functions to go back to normal. If things go  right after that, you’re good to go. Otherwise, try any of these subsequent procedures.

Generally, you can save battery life through regular complete charging, reducing screen and data use, and closing apps and features when you’re not using them. To make this more specific, refer to each of the subsequent workarounds.

Adjust and optimize your iPhone settings

Raise to Wake, Background App Refresh, screen brightness, notifications, and other pertinent features on the iPhone consume much power when enabled or set to the maximum level.

So here are the features that you can configure to preserve battery power on your iPhone 8 Plus.

  • Turn on Auto-brightness or reduce screen brightness manually. Screen brightness is typically the number one cause of battery drain on your iPhone. That is why it is recommended to keep your device’s screen brightness at a lower level.
  1. To dim your display, swipe up from the bottom of your screen to open the Control Center then drag the Brightness slider to the left.
  2. To turn Auto-Brightness on, go to Settings-> Display & Brightness menu then tap to enable Auto-Brightness.
  • Turning off the display when the device is not in use will also help stretch the battery power.
  • Disable motion effects and dynamic backgrounds. Configuring the app settings on your iPhone to decrease the frequency of app and widget updates can also help you save some of your battery. The same thing happens when you remove any apps if you are not using them on your iPhone. Apps and widgets that are running in the background use a significant amount of battery even when they’re not open.
  • Switch from 4G to 3G network, if possible. While 4G network offers faster Internet speed, it also requires and consumes more power when in use. If you’re willing to sacrifice a little of your Internet browsing speed, then you may resort to a temporary solution just to stretch your iPhone’s power by switching from 4G to 3G network instead.
  • Turn off connectivity features including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use. Wireless connectivity features such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Mobile Hotspot and GPS (location services) can impact the battery when they are active because they typically search for connections. Thus turning these features off when not using them can help stretch your iPhone’s power. If available, prefer to use Wi-Fi over LTE connection (Cellular Data) because Wi-Fi uses less power than an LTE. You can turn off these settings through the Control Center or by navigating to the Settings menu on your iPhone 8 Plus. Just don’t forget to enable them when you’ll use them again.
  • Disabling location services for your apps can also save you more power. To prevent apps from using your location in the background, following these steps:
  1. Go to Settings-> Privacy-> Location Services.
  2. Tap on the app that you want to configure.
  3. Tap on Never to prevent any location access or select While Using the App to grant location access only when the app is open.

Please note though that turning off persistent location also denotes that apps cannot alert you when you’re near a friend or other relevant notifications. But if power saving is more important to you, then consider these among your options.

Turn on Low Power Mode

Enabling Low Power Mode on your iPhone 8 Plus will reduce the amount of power that your device uses especially when the battery gets low.

  • To turn on this feature, go to Settings-> Battery, then tap the switch to enable Low Power Mode.

Typically, you’ll be prompted to enable this feature when your battery goes down to 20 percent. When Low Power Mode is active, some features might take longer to complete and some tasks may not work too. Among the iPhone features and functions that are affected when Low Power Mode is turned on would include email fetching, Hey Siri, background app refresh, automatic downloads, auto-lock, and some visual effects.
You’ll know when Low Power Mode is active if the battery icon on the status bar appears in yellow orange color.

Check which apps are using the most power

Some third-party apps particularly social media apps like Facebook app used up a significant amount of power. Even when these apps are not in used, keeping them active in the background (in standby mode) can still speed up power draining especially with frequent notifications and syncing. As much as possible, keeps these apps completely closed when not in use.

  • To check battery usage on your iPhone 8 Plus, go to Settings-> Battery-> Battery Usage menu.

Under Battery Usage, you will see a breakdown of how much power each app or service is using while on screen and while in the background. To view more details on the onscreen (foreground) and background power usage, tap on the Show Detailed Usage button. To get a broader look at power consumption over time, tap on Last 7 Days.

Restore your iPhone 8 Plus

Performing a system restore can offer an ultimate solution if the battery draining issue is inflicted by a bad app or faulty iOS. You may consider an iOS restore if the problem started after updating to the latest version of iOS like iOS 11.2 or 11.2.1, for instance. It is reasonable to downgrade to a more stable version especially if the new iOS version is giving you nothing but troubles.

There are three different kinds of system restore you can do on your iPhone. First you can try the standard iPhone restore through iTunes. To get this done, you’ll need to secure a computer with the latest iTunes software installed. Then connect your iPhone to the computer and follow the onscreen instructions to carry out and complete the entire iOS restore process.

If the standard restore won’t help, you can proceed and try performing a recovery mode restore. Again, you will need to use iTunes on a computer to put your iPhone 8 Plus in recovery mode and carry out iOS restore through this mode. Usually, device issues that are caused by a faulty software can be dealt with by a recovery mode restore but there are also some cases when the bug is tough enough to withstand the process and so the problem persists. In this case, you remaining option is a DFU mode restore.

DFU stands for Device Firmware Upgrade mode, a deepest type of system restore you can do on your iPhone. Putting your iPhone in a DFU state will allow your device to communicate with iTunes without activating the bootloader or operating system. To enter DFU mode on your iPhone 8 Plus, you’ll also need to use iTunes. It requires a perfect timing to get into this mode so if you don’t get it there on your first try, don’t be afraid to try again.

You may opt to restore to a previous iOS backup file or restore your iPhone 8 Plus to its factory defaults. Note that these procedures will erase all your iPhone data so don’t forget to backup your iPhone before you start doing any of the three iOS restore options.

You can find our step-by-step guide on how to enter DFU mode and perform a DFU mode restore on your iPhone 8 Plus on the tutorial section for iPhone 8 Plus posted on our dedicated Troubleshooting page. Feel free to visit the page any time when you need help with the steps.
