Problem 1: iPhone 7 apps freezes, iPhone 7 keeps overheating

My iPhone 7 plus has problems. The big problem is apps stuck and overheating. iPhone and last i am to say that i am going to service center at least 7 to 8 times in 1st 4 months in warranty of device. Three times i am going to problem of apps stuck or crashes but service center was asking me there is a software problem but in 10 days problems will be arises to apps crashes. Please help me now. — Amit

Solution: Hi Amit. A phone or its apps may appear to freeze or crash when overheating is present because that’s how smartphones are designed. In a lot of cases, overheating in itself is not the issue but rather result of something deeper, although it can also manifest to your current experience which is freezing or crashing or apps or of the phone. In other words, while overheating may directly be the cause why apps appear to freeze or the phone to lag, it may also just be one of the symptoms of a deeper problem. Below are some of the possible reasons why a phone may be overheating:

  • environmental reason
  • iOS problem
  • content/s (apps and service) is problematic and require a lot of computing resources all the time
  • hardware problem

Environmental extremes

Exposing your device to dust, water, or heat is bad for the health of your iPhone. We know that an iPhone 7 is IP67 certified, which means that it has good dust and water resistance but that doesn’t mean you’ll want to push the limits of that protection. While your iPhone 7 may be relatively safe from both dust and water, it can still fail slowly or suddenly when exposed to high heat environment. Leaving it in a car under a hot sun is often one of the common reasons why a smartphone suddenly dies or shows power-related problems. We don’t know the full history of your device but if you’re not careful with it, don’t expect it to work normally for a long time.

A good rule to follow is to treat your smartphone like a baby. It needs care and it can’t live if exposed to elements. Overheating can be one of the initial signs that the hardware may be failing.

Operating system glitch

Overheating can also result from iOS or operating system glitch. Keep in mind that not every iOS iteration is perfect. There are millions of possible points of failure in an iOS environment. Although Apple developers are excellent in smoothing things out, there will always come a time that the operating system may fail due to either its interaction with apps, or due to poor coding. The problem is, there’s often no way for an end user to know if an issue is being caused by an iOS bug. The good thing is, if there are a lot of users are experiencing the same glitch, Apple may get wind of the issue and issue a patch to fix it. That’s why you should always set your phone to install updates automatically. You must also do a full restore if installing updates won’t fix anything.

Bad apps is not uncommon

With hundreds of thousands of apps for iOS devices, it’s not unusual for some Apple devices to fail or encounter problems. Be aware that not all apps are created equal. Some may be excellent while a lot are shoddily built. Be sure to uninstall apps if you encounter problems after a full restore won’t change anything. In other words, if the problem returns after you’ve already restored the device, there’s a chance that a bad app may be to blame. Uninstall app one by one until you’ve eliminated the issue. If the problem remains after you’ve removed all third party apps, that means that the cause is either due to iOS bug, or a hardware malfunction.

Broken hardware

As an iOS user, there’s only so much that you can do when it comes to troubleshooting. The usual dose of software troubleshooting will most likely only include:

  • Perform a soft reset
  • Reset All Settings
  • Install iOS and app updates
  • Erase All Content and Settings
  • Perform a DFU mode update or full restore

If you’ve already tried all of them including the ones we include above, then it’s safe to assume that the main reason for your issues is bad hardware. In this case, you’ll want to contact Apple support first so their technician can check your phone. Try to avoid letting a non-Apple technician handle the repair but if Apple service center is out of the question, go ahead and let an independent service center do the job.

Problem 2: iPhone 7 keeps restarting and freezing on its own

Hello. I purchased my iPhone 7 on Black Friday last year and it isn’t preforming well. It keeps glitching out, turning off on its own and not turning back on for a few minutes, lagging , and freezing. I tried restarting it. I updated it and all that but it still isn’t working well. it’s not dying and hasn’t been it’s been like this for a day or two and it’s still like this. Any advice for how to fix it ? — Jazmine

Solution: Hi Jazmine. Your issue may be similar to Amit’s above so be sure to go over our suggestions for him. Keep in mind that overheating can also be a symptom of a hardware problem. If you can’t make the device to work normally again after doing all software troubleshooting, you must send it in.

Problem 3: iPhone 7 won’t receive SMS randomly

I recently got a new iPhone 7 as well as changed carriers. Ever since then I am unable to receive all the messages from a particular person. I basically get them at random. I can see them incoming via my online activity but yet some of them are not coming through on my phone. I’ve exhausted everything except replacement as people advised. It doesn’t seem like a hardware issue but rather with that particular persons device or carrier, which by the way, they have Android with cricket network.

Like I said it all started happening ever since I switched carriers and got the new iPhone 7. Should I get a replacement, switch back to old carrier or what do you think I should do? Please help hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!! — Mary

Solution: Hi Mary. We assume you’re having a problem with text messages (SMS) and not iMessage since the other guy has Android. The thing with iOS is that it’s a closed system. As much as possible, Apple wants to make messaging in its platform exclusive to Apple devices only (which is impossible anyway since there are more non-Apple users out there). The design of its messaging app, although it’s most of the time flawless in screening out what needs to be sent as SMS (green bubble) and what must be sent as iMessage (blue bubble), it can sometimes fail. The message you’re sending to that contact may not be delivered actually so you’ll most likely not get the response you’re expecting. Well, that’s one of the reasons for your problem anyway.

Another possible cause may be on contact’s end. Just like iOS, Android devices and Android software is not perfect. There’s always the possibility that your friend’s phone may be having a hard time receiving and/or sending SMS so even if yours is okay, there will always be a break in the relationship. And just like in real life relationship, text messaging is a two-way street. If you are positive that you’ve already exhausted everything, to the point that you’ve resorted to restoring the phone and letting your carrier know of the issue, then it’s time that you mention the issue to your friend. It can be an issue on his or her end and you have no control over that.

We advise against getting a phone replacement in this case unless you are 100% positive that it’s a device problem on your end. If your phone receives SMS and other messages from other users fine, then there’s no need to replace your device at all.

The problem must be in the transmission of the message from the other side.

Problem 4: iPhone 7 voicemails are garbled, SMS are missing

Hello. Sound is so broken and distorted ONLY with one app – listening to my voice messages. It’s so chopped up and garbled that it’s impossible to hear my messages. Also, no notice is showing that I’ve missed messages although I’m aware of about 15 missed messages. I’ve gone through your trouble shooting tips and have done everything suggested. Bluetooth off, phone rebooted several times. I tested sound listening to music etc and that’s all fine. What to do? — Pamala

Solution: Hi Pamala. Try to record your own voice using voice memo app and listen to it. If the recording sounds fine, that means that the garbled sound in your voice mail is service related. The same may be true for your second issue regarding missed messages. Be sure to your carrier about them as the problem is definitely outside of your control.

Problem 5: Computer can’t access emails when they are read in iPhone 7, IMAP vs POP

I synced my Outlook Mail email (a university .edu address) with my iPhone 7. But when I get an email and view it/open it on my phone, it does not show up in my inbox on my desktop PC. How do I explicitly fix this? I want emails that I read or see as incoming on my phone to be available when I access my email on my desktop PC. Why would technology companies even think humans would want emails to automatically be deleted from the desktop server just because we’ve viewed them first on our phone? — Alanaholland08

Solution: Hi Alanaholland08. When setting an email up, there are things called IMAP and POP. Both are email protocols that tell an email server how to deliver your messages to third party devices like smartphones or computers.

If you want to view your emails on multiple devices such as computers and smartphones, you must use IMAP. POP is an older standard that only allows storing of emails in one device. In other words, you want to use IMAP so your remote email server will keep a permanent copy of your emails while also allowing other devices where you set up your email account access to your messages.

Problem 6: iPhone 7 downloads old emails when deleting new ones

I just recently upgraded to the iPhone 7 plus from an iPhone 6S. All working fine but something going on with email I’ve not seen before. I can go to my inbox at the end of each day and attempt to clear off emails that are no longer needed and I get flooded with old emails to the inbox. For example, I can clear off 20 emails from today’s date (6/21/17) and while I’m making this clean up, the phone will forward to my inbox unread emails from a year ago. In only a few minutes time I may see 200 emails get sent to my inbox all from a year ago date. I can go through right then and clear off only to see more keep coming forward. As I delete them, I would expect the trash folder to collect the deleted emails but that’s not happening either. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated. — Jeff

Solution: Hi Jeff. This can be due to a bug in your email app. To fix it, try the following:

Restart the phone. This should be the first step in any iPhone software issue. It’s simple but can work sometimes.

Close the app. Since we suspect that it’s just an app issue, closing and opening the email app may help. To do that, double-click on the Home button to access the app switcher and simply swipe up on the email app. That should close the app. After closing the app, restart the phone again before checking what happens.

Reconfigure the email account. If the problem remains after closing the app and restarting the phone, your next move is to delete your email account from the app and add it again. Before adding the email to app, try to check if the same behavior happens when you access your email via webmail using a computer. If the problem is replicated in webmail, that means that it’s not an iPhone issue but rather an account or email service issue. Make sure to contact your email service provider if that’s the case.

Try another email app (if you’re using a third party email app). This only applies if you’re not using the native Apple email app.

Reset All Settings. If you’ve come this far, the cause of the problem must be iOS related so to continue the troubleshooting ladder, the next best thing to do is to reset all settings of your device. This procedure can be done without creating a backup. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings.
  2. Scroll down to bottom and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom again and tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset All Settings.

Do a full restore. Should the issue remains, you have no other choice but to a more drastic solution. This involves wiping all personal data so be sure to do a backup first either via iCloud, iTunes, or both. Below are the steps on how to fully restore your iPhone to its defaults:

  1. Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a back at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
  3. We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
  4. Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
  5. Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
  6. Confirm by clicking on Restore
  7. Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
  8. After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.

Problem 7: iPhone 7 won’t stay connected to wifi networks

My iPhone 7 will not stay connected to my car wifi. I have the iPHone 7 since it first came out. Prior to the 7, my 6s worked just fine with my car wifi. I also find that my phone removes itself from my home wifi and connects itself to my printer wifi. Because I have the problem at home and in my car (car just goes to LTE) I am inclined to believe it is an issue with my phone. Any suggestions would be awesome! — Cara

Solution: Hi Cara. Try resetting your phone’s settings first. This procedure deletes list of networks you’ve connected to before so it may help. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings.
  2. Scroll down to bottom and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom again and tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset All Settings.

Problem 8: iPhone 7 reboots at random after screen replacement

I have a iPhone 7 plus model A1784 (Note: I changed the screen, third party). Phone randomly reboots up when I open the camera app. Also, when I try to make a call the phone reboots up. I noticed that at times when it doesn’t reboot I can’t hear from the earpiece. Could it be that it’s hardware issue?

I already changed the earpiece. Or something fixable? I had also read that you guys put a article that If you did a back up to the new phone you could’ve possibly put unwanted bugs with the restore? Thing is that I jumped from a iPhone 6s+ that was on iOS 9.3.5, maybe that’s the issue? Anything would help guys! Thanks! — Ramiro

Solution: Hi Ramiro. DIY (do-it-yourself) repairs can be fun and cheap but sometimes, if not done properly, it could lead to more problems afterwards. If your phone was physically impacted before you replaced the screen, that would even double the chance of causing problems. Unnecessary shock from an accidental drop almost always leads to motherboard damage. Sometimes, problems won’t manifest right away, while in other cases, they lead to more serious troubles immediately. If the random reboot issue started right after you replaced the screen and continued at present, the most likely cause is bad hardware. There’s no amount of software solutions that you can do to fix that. You either have to let a more experienced person check the phone for you, or just get a replacement device.

As to the possible bugs “jumping” from one device to another or the same phone after a full restore and restoration of backup, yes, that’s possible. The most likely reason for that is not iOS-related but rather one of your apps. If you simply re-install a problematic app after a full restore, the issue will just return in no time.

Problem 9: iPhone 7 not detecting SIM card, no cellular signal

My iPhone 7 plus was working truly well until yesterday night when I performed a factory reset. This morning I switched it on and now there is no mobile network. I am using the SIM card of the same network provider on my other Android device which shows full network. I have ejected and reinserted my SIM card too but all in vain. Kindly help me with this issue. — Pranjal

Solution: Hi Pranjal. A network problem like this one can be caused just as easily by an iOS glitch as a bad hardware. Since you did not provide more details about the problem and the relevant history of the device, we have no way of telling where the problem lies. Try to see if you can fix this issue by doing the following:

  1. Sign out of your iCloud account (if applicable).
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.

Once you’ve restored the phone to its defaults, install the latest iOS version without any third party apps. If the problem stays, contact Apple support.

Problem 10: Can’t delete text conversations in iPhone 7, MORE option is missing

I can find this answer repeatedly however 97% of the time I can’t nor can anyone else make this work. When trying to delete particular texts from conversations, if I tap and hold the text in question, I constantly get the little dancing heart, the “haha” the question mark and so on but the “more” screen WILL NOT appear. I’ve tried every form of tapping and holding and only on a “rare” occasion will I get the option with “more”. I really need this to work! Thank you so much! — A.king

Solution: Hi A.king. Below are the steps on how to delete a conversation thread from Apple’s native Messages app:

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap on the chat containing the message you want to delete.
  3. Tap and hold the conversation you want to delete.
  4. Tap MORE from the pop-up menu.
  5. If you want to delete a certain message in the conversation thread only, simply tap the circle next to it. If you want to delete the entire chat conversation, hit Delete All.
  6. Tap on the delete button (trash can icon).

If you’re getting the menu that shows the dancing heart icon, thumbs up icon, question mark icon, etc., then the MORE option should be shown at the bottom part just like in the picture below.

MORE option 8570158

If your app does show that option at the bottom at all, something must be wrong with it. As far as we know, the MORE option should be there regardless of the carrier firmware or iPhone model you have. Since we know nothing about your specific device, we recommend that you contact Apple support for further troubleshooting.
