How to Fix Apple Music “Cannot Connect, Retry” Error on iPhone

When Apple Music throws the “Cannot Connect, Retry” message, it usually means something’s gone wrong with your connection or account. Whether you’re trying to stream, download, or just browse your library, this error can be a real buzzkill. Luckily, there are a bunch of simple fixes you can try to get things working again.

Check Your Internet Connection First

Apple Music needs a solid connection to work properly. If your connection is shaky, expect issues like this.

  • Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi or have cellular data turned on.
  • Try loading a webpage or YouTube video to test your connection.
  • If using Wi-Fi, try switching to cellular data (or vice versa).
  • Reboot your router if other apps are slow too.

Force Quit Apple Music and Reopen It

Sometimes the app just needs a quick refresh.

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-click the Home button on older iPhones).
  • Find Apple Music and swipe it off the screen to close it.
  • Reopen the app and try again.

Restart Your iPhone

A simple restart can resolve a lot of temporary glitches.

  • For iPhones with Face ID: Press and release Volume Up > press and release Volume Down > press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • For iPhones with a Home button: Press and hold the Side button, then slide to power off. Turn it back on after a few seconds.

Update iOS to the Latest Version

Older iOS versions can cause app hiccups, especially after updates to Apple Music.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If there’s an update available, tap Download and Install.

Sign Out of Apple Music and Sign Back In

If the issue started after an update or Apple ID change, this can reset your account’s sync.

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Media & Purchases > Sign Out.
  • Open Apple Music and sign in again with your Apple ID.

Reset Network Settings

If your internet works for everything except Apple Music, try this.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings.

Check Apple’s System Status Page

Sometimes the problem is on Apple’s end.

Disable VPN or Ad Blockers

If you’re using a VPN or certain firewall-style apps, they might block Apple Music connections.

  • Disable any VPNs or DNS-altering apps.
  • Reopen Apple Music and test again.

Contact Apple Support

Still getting the error? Time to bring in the pros.

  • Visit https://support.apple.com or use the Apple Support app.
  • They can check your Apple ID or see if something deeper is affecting your device.
