iPhone SE 3 Can’t Send Text Messages? Here’s How to Fix It
If your iPhone SE 3 isn’t sending SMS messages, it can be super frustrating—especially when you know your contacts are using regular text instead of iMessage. Whether it’s a network glitch, a settings mishap, or something more technical, here’s a full list of solutions you can try to get your text messages working again.
Check the Basics First
Before jumping into the deep fixes, make sure:
- You’ve entered the correct phone number.
- Your iPhone has at least 2 bars of cellular signal.
- You’re not in Airplane Mode.
- SMS messaging is part of your mobile plan (especially important for prepaid or suspended accounts).
If everything checks out and you still can’t send texts, move on to the steps below.
1. Force Close the Messages App
Sometimes the Messages app just needs a fresh start.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to open the app switcher.
- Find the Messages preview and swipe it up to close it.
- Reopen Messages and try sending your text again.
2. Toggle Airplane Mode On and Off
This quick reset can fix weird cellular hiccups.
- Go to Settings > Airplane Mode.
- Turn Airplane Mode ON.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Go back to Settings and turn Airplane Mode OFF.
Wait a few seconds for the signal to come back, then try texting again.
3. Turn Off iMessage (Temporarily)
If iMessage is acting up, it could interfere with regular SMS.
- Go to Settings > Messages.
- Toggle iMessage OFF.
- Try sending a plain SMS text (green bubble) to someone.
You can turn iMessage back on later if needed.
4. Make Sure “Send as SMS” is Enabled
Your iPhone might be defaulting to iMessage only.
- Go to Settings > Messages.
- Scroll down and toggle Send as SMS ON.
Try sending a text again to see if it goes through.
5. Restart Your iPhone
Sometimes a simple reboot clears up background issues.
- Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the slider appears.
- Drag the slider to power off.
- Turn the phone back on after a few seconds.
6. Reset Network Settings
This clears out old or broken network configurations without deleting your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm.
Note: You’ll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and reconnect Bluetooth devices afterward.
7. Check for Carrier Settings Update
Outdated carrier settings can mess with texting.
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- If there’s an update available, you’ll see a prompt to install it.
8. Update iOS to the Latest Version
Bug fixes in new iOS updates can resolve texting issues.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If there’s an update available, tap Download and Install.
Make sure you’re on Wi-Fi and have enough battery.
9. Remove and Reinsert Your SIM Card
If your SIM is loose or corrupted, this can help.
- Turn off your iPhone.
- Use a SIM ejector tool or paperclip to remove the SIM tray.
- Take out the SIM card, wait a few seconds, and reinsert it.
- Turn your phone back on and test SMS again.
10. Do a Factory Reset (Last Resort)
Only do this if nothing else works—and back up your data first.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow the prompts to wipe and restore your iPhone.
This wipes everything, so make sure you’ve saved your important stuff to iCloud or a computer.
