How to Use Your iPhone 8 as a Wireless Router (Personal Hotspot Guide)
Need to get your laptop or tablet online but don’t have Wi-Fi? Good news—your iPhone 8 can act as a wireless router! Using the Personal Hotspot feature, you can share your iPhone’s cellular data connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. Here’s how to set it up and get connected.
What You’ll Need First
Before turning your iPhone into a hotspot, make sure:
- Your data plan supports tethering / Personal Hotspot
- You’re running a recent version of iOS
- You know your data limits to avoid surprise charges
📞 If you’re unsure about your plan, contact your carrier to confirm hotspot support.
How to Turn On Personal Hotspot on iPhone 8
- Go to Settings > Cellular
- Tap Personal Hotspot
- Toggle Allow Others to Join to On
- Set or note your Wi-Fi password
💡 If you don’t see the Personal Hotspot option, check Settings > Mobile Data or call your carrier to enable it.
Connect a Device Using Wi-Fi
- On the device you want to connect, open Wi-Fi settings
- Select your iPhone (it’ll show up as a Wi-Fi network)
- Enter the password from your iPhone’s Hotspot settings
That’s it—you’re connected and online via your iPhone’s data.
Connect Using USB
- Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on your Mac or PC
- Plug your iPhone into the computer using a Lightning cable
- Trust the computer if prompted on your iPhone
- On your Mac: Go to System Preferences > Network, select iPhone USB
- On Windows: Your iPhone should appear in Network Connections
Your computer now uses your iPhone’s data connection.
Connect Using Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth on both your iPhone and the other device
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth
- On your Mac/PC, pair with your iPhone
- After pairing, your iPhone should appear as an internet option
This method is slower than Wi-Fi but can be useful when USB isn’t an option.
Use Continuity to Share Hotspot with Your Mac (Apple Ecosystem Only)
- Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices
- Sign into iCloud with the same Apple ID on both
- Click the Wi-Fi icon on your Mac
- Under Personal Hotspot, select your iPhone
- Your Mac connects instantly—no password needed
This only works with recent versions of macOS and iOS.
To Disconnect Devices
- Turn off Personal Hotspot
- Turn off Bluetooth
- Or simply unplug the USB cable
This will stop your iPhone from sharing its data connection.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Restart your iPhone and the device you’re trying to connect
- Toggle Airplane Mode off and on
- Check for iOS updates under Settings > General > Software Update
- Reset network settings if needed:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings
