How to Use Your iPhone 8 as a Wireless Router (Personal Hotspot Guide)

Need to get your laptop or tablet online but don’t have Wi-Fi? Good news—your iPhone 8 can act as a wireless router! Using the Personal Hotspot feature, you can share your iPhone’s cellular data connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. Here’s how to set it up and get connected.

What You’ll Need First

Before turning your iPhone into a hotspot, make sure:

  • Your data plan supports tethering / Personal Hotspot
  • You’re running a recent version of iOS
  • You know your data limits to avoid surprise charges

📞 If you’re unsure about your plan, contact your carrier to confirm hotspot support.

How to Turn On Personal Hotspot on iPhone 8

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot
  3. Toggle Allow Others to Join to On
  4. Set or note your Wi-Fi password

💡 If you don’t see the Personal Hotspot option, check Settings > Mobile Data or call your carrier to enable it.

Connect a Device Using Wi-Fi

  1. On the device you want to connect, open Wi-Fi settings
  2. Select your iPhone (it’ll show up as a Wi-Fi network)
  3. Enter the password from your iPhone’s Hotspot settings

That’s it—you’re connected and online via your iPhone’s data.

Connect Using USB

  1. Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on your Mac or PC
  2. Plug your iPhone into the computer using a Lightning cable
  3. Trust the computer if prompted on your iPhone
  4. On your Mac: Go to System Preferences > Network, select iPhone USB
  5. On Windows: Your iPhone should appear in Network Connections

Your computer now uses your iPhone’s data connection.

Connect Using Bluetooth

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on both your iPhone and the other device
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth
  3. On your Mac/PC, pair with your iPhone
  4. After pairing, your iPhone should appear as an internet option

This method is slower than Wi-Fi but can be useful when USB isn’t an option.

Use Continuity to Share Hotspot with Your Mac (Apple Ecosystem Only)

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices
  2. Sign into iCloud with the same Apple ID on both
  3. Click the Wi-Fi icon on your Mac
  4. Under Personal Hotspot, select your iPhone
  5. Your Mac connects instantly—no password needed

This only works with recent versions of macOS and iOS.

To Disconnect Devices

  • Turn off Personal Hotspot
  • Turn off Bluetooth
  • Or simply unplug the USB cable

This will stop your iPhone from sharing its data connection.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Restart your iPhone and the device you’re trying to connect
  • Toggle Airplane Mode off and on
  • Check for iOS updates under Settings > General > Software Update
  • Reset network settings if needed:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings
