If your AirPods aren’t charging when placed in their case, you’re not alone — and it’s not always the case that’s broken. Sometimes it’s a dirty charging contact, a glitchy software issue, or even a bad Lightning cable. Here’s a complete guide to help you figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it.
1. Check the Charging Connections
First things first — make sure everything is physically connected and powered properly.
- If you’re using a Lightning cable, make sure it’s plugged in securely at both ends.
- Try plugging it directly into a wall outlet — avoid power strips or USB hubs.
- Use a genuine Apple cable and adapter if possible. Faulty third-party accessories can cause issues.
- If you’re using a wireless charging pad, ensure the USB cable is firmly plugged into the pad and power source.
Pro Tip: Try a different cable and adapter to rule out hardware failure.
2. Clean the AirPods Case
Dirt and lint can easily block the charging contacts inside the case or the port on the outside.
- Use a dry microfiber cloth to clean the outside and inside of the case.
- For the charging port, gently remove any debris using a toothpick or soft brush.
- Clean the metal contacts inside where the AirPods sit — they must be free of grime to connect properly.
3. Reset Your AirPods Case
Sometimes, a minor software glitch can prevent proper charging.
To reset the case:
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber, then white.
- Let go of the button — your AirPods are now reset.
- Reconnect them to your iPhone by following the on-screen pairing instructions.
4. Check and Update AirPods Firmware
AirPods usually update automatically, but a bug in old firmware might mess with charging.
To check the firmware version:
- Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the (i) next to your AirPods.
- Scroll to Firmware Version.
To force an update:
- Put your AirPods in the case and plug it into power.
- Place it near your iPhone while it’s connected to Wi-Fi.
- Leave them together for about 30 minutes — if there’s an update, it should install.
5. Replace the Charging Case (If Needed)
If your AirPods work fine but the case won’t charge or charge them, the battery inside the case may be shot — especially if it’s been used for a long time.
You can:
- Buy a replacement case directly from Apple or an authorized reseller.
- Visit the Apple Store to have them test the case and determine if it’s under warranty.
6. Contact Apple Support
If you’re still within warranty or AppleCare, contact Apple Support for help. They might replace the case or AirPods, or offer service options.
You can start at support.apple.com or through the Apple Support app.
