Working with the Apple iPhone 6s Basic Components and Home Screen Features

Working with the Basic Components

  1. Sleep/Wake button – used to lock and unlock your iPhone’s screen. It’s the same button used to power your iPhone on or off.
  • To lock or unlock its screen, simply press the Sleep/Wake button.
  • To turn your iPhone on or off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button.
  1. Home button – used to go back to the Home screen.
  • To view all currently running apps, press the Home button.
  • To open Siri or voice control, press and hold the Home button.

Hint: The Home button is where the Touch ID fingerprint identity sensor resides.

  • To reset your iPhone, press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons simultaneously for at least 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. It’s the only way to perform a soft reset, considering it’s a uni-body device with a non-removable internal battery.
  1. Volume buttons – used to adjust media or call volume. To increase or decrease volume level of a call or media, press the Volume up or down buttons accordingly.
  2. Ring/Silent switch – used to put your iPhone in ring mode or silent mode. This switch is located on top of the Volume Up/Down button.
  • To switch your phone in ring mode to silent mode or vice versa, flip the Ring/Silent switch.

Hint: When ring mode is activated, your iPhone plays all sounds. In silent mode, ring, alerts and other sound effects will not be played but the phone may still vibrate.

  1. iSight Camera – located on the back of your iPhone, the iSight camera is the new rear-facing camera with a 12MP state-of-the-art sensor and more enhanced features including a new image signal processor, advanced pixel technology, and Focus Pixels, to name a few.
  2. True Tone Flash – located on the back of your iPhone used to brighten up photos/videos whenever needed.
  3. Rear microphone – it’s located on the back of the phone in between the iSight camera and the True Tone Flash.
  4. Receiver/front microphone – it’s located on the front of your iPhone.
  5. FaceTime camera – located on the upper-left front of your iPhone that comes with a higher resolution 5MP FaceTime sensor used to capture selfie shots and make FaceTime calls.
  6. Headset jack – located at the bottom part of your iPhone.
  7. SIM card tray – is located on the right side of your iPhone. This iPhone used a Nano-SIM card.
  8. Lightning connector – is located at the bottom of your iPhone.
  9. Speakers – located at the bottom of your iPhone.

How to Install or Replace the SIM card on your iPhone 6s

A SIM card is required for you to use cellular services on your device. When inserting or remove the SIM card, make sure the phone is completely powered off before you open the tray.

To install or replace the SIM card on your phone, just locate the SIM tray and proceed with the following steps:

  1. Use the SIM eject tool and insert it into the small hole. Push it firmly until the SIM tray is released. If a SIM eject tool is not available, you can use a paper clip instead.
  2. When the tray is opened, remove the ejector tool and then pull the SIM tray out.
  3. Now carefully place the Nano SIM card into the tray. Use the angled corner to ensure the Nano SIM is properly inserted.
  4. Now, carefully place the SIM tray back into the slot.
  5. Push the SIM tray firmly shut until it clicks into place. It has to be flushed with the side of the phone.
  6. Turn your iPhone back on by pressing the hold and Sleep/Wake button until you see the Apple logo.

If the SIM card is not properly inserted, you will usually be prompted with a SIM card error like ‘No SIM’ prompt shown on top of the screen. Otherwise, you’re good to go.

How to View the Home Screen Panels on your iPhone 6s

Your iPhone features separate home screen panels used to display apps, shortcuts, widgets, and the like. To navigate or access the extended Home screen panels on your device, just swipe left from the Home screen. Swipe down to access Spotlight search – a tool used to search for contacts, messages, mails, calendars, and other contents in your device.

How to use Spotlight Search on your iPhone 6s

To get started, go to the Home screen and swipe right to navigate Spotlight Search.

Once you’re in Spotlight Search, enter your search text on the Search field. A list of matching results will be shown as you enter the text. You can select any from these results at any time.

Note: Tap Search located in the lower right, if necessary.

How to Reset Home Screen Layout on your iPhone 6s

You can change the Home screen layout for your phone, whenever you like. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select Reset Home Screen Layout.
  5. To confirm action, tap Reset Home Screen.

How to Change Text Size on your iPhone 6s Screen

You can change the screen text size on your iPhone whenever you want. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to and tap General.
  3. Tap Accessibility to continue.
  4. Tap to select an option you prefer.
  • To continue with this guide, tap Larger Text.
  1. Now tap and drag the slider to the desired text size.
  2. Tap Larger Accessibility Sizes, to enable the feature and opt for an even larger text size for your screen text.

If necessary, you can change the language of your phone and menus with the following steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Language & Region.
  4. Tap iPhone Language.
  5. Tap to select a language you want to use on your phone.

How to Set Time & Date on your iPhone 6s

Follow these steps to set the time and date of your iPhone 6s clock, just in case it’s not showing the right time or date:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Date & Time.
  4. Drag the slider next to Set Automatically, to disable or turn off the feature.
  5. Next, tap the date and time.
  6. Drag the roller to the appropriate date and time.
  7. Press the Home button to complete the process.

By default, your device is set to automatically update the time zone. If you want the clock to automatically update based on the time zone it’s in, just drag the slider next to Set Automatically to enable or turn the feature on.

How to Adjust your iPhone 6s Screen Brightness

You can make your device screen backlight a little brighter or darker with the following steps:

  1. Go to the Home screen or any screen.
  2. Slide your finger up from the bottom of the screen. Doing this will launch the Control Center.
  • Slide your finger up again in case you see a small arrow.
  1. Next, touch and drag the slider to adjust screen brightness manually.
  • If you want to change the time before the backlight times out, follow these steps:
  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to and tap General.
  3. Select Auto-Lock.
  4. Tap to select any from the given options.
  • To preserve battery life, set it to the shortest time.
