Problem: iPhone X keeps restarting after accidental drop

Hi. I dropped my phone today and the screen separated a bit. Now it continually restarts when I’m using it and it’s very slow. I’m going on a trip tomorrow morning and I can’t be without a phone. I would like to know what I can do or if there is a way I could repair it myself ASAP. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how I can fix it or what the problem could be. Thank you.

Solution: If the screen broke after dropping your iPhone, the impact must be strong enough to damage the motherboard or other components inside. This means that you have a hardware problem at hand. There will be no software solution that you can do to fix a physically broken hardware obviously so you’ll most likely need to send the phone in for repair or replacement.

At the moment, what you can do is to check if what we’re saying is true by doing a factory reset and a DFU Mode Restore. Factory reset will return all software settings of the device to defaults. Factory state software has few to no bugs so it should help you confirm if bad hardware is causing the problems right now.

You can do DFU Mode Restore in order reinstall the factory firmware that causes iPhone keeps restarting issue but, just like a factory reset, won’t be helpful if the phone has suffered serious hardware malfunction at this time. Again, the aim of a DFU Mode Restore is to confirm whether or not our suspicion is true. You’ll most probably still need to let a professional check the hardware so you’ll be advised on what to do next.

And no, there’s nothing much that we can do if your iphone x has been physically damaged. A thorough hardware check must be conducted to know the extent of the damage to the system and we can’t do that remotely. A technician must check your phone for you.

For reference, below are the steps on how to perform factory reset and DFU Mode Restore.

Step 1: How to factory reset your iPhone X:

  1. Tap to open the Settings app from Home.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Scroll down to and then tap on Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings. This will master reset your iPhone XR.
  5. If prompted, enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm factory reset.

Step 2: How to perform DFU Mode Restore on iPhone X

  1. Connect your iPhone X to your computer using the USB or Lightning cable that comes with it.
  2. Open iTunes on your computer.
  3. Turn off your iPhone X as you normally do. In iOS 11, you can turn off your iPhone by going to Settings-> General-> Shut Down menu-> then toggle the slider to the right. Doing so turns off the iPhone.
  4. Press and hold the Side button (Power button) for 3 seconds. Then, press and hold the Volume Down button  while still holding down the Side button. Keep holding both buttons for 10 seconds.
    • If the Apple logo appears, it means that you have held the buttons for too long. If this happens, you need to go back from the very start. Otherwise, skip to the next step.
  5. Release the Side button but keep holding down the Volume Down button for about 5 seconds more.
    • If you are prompted with the Plug into iTunes screen, it means that you have entered Recovery Mode instead. So you’ll need to go back to the very first step and make sure you’re not holding the buttons for so long.
    • If your iPhone X screen remains black, that means your device has successfully entered DFU mode. iTunes will then prompt you with an alert message saying that it has detected your iPhone and will allow it to be restored. Follow the onscreen instructions to restore your iPhone X in iTunes.

Step 3: Get professional help

As mentioned above, hardware malfunction which causes iPhone X keeps restarting problem can’t be fixed by performing software solutions. If both suggestions above won’t help, bring the phone to your local Apple Service Center. Their technician will be the one to tell you if they can fix the device or not. Apple usually refuses to fix mangled devices (even if you’ll pay for it) so in that case, allow a third party technician do the job.
