What to do if iPhone X freezes and won’t power down

Hello Apple fans! Today’s troubleshooting article will deal with some of the common issues of the #iPhoneX. When it comes to iPhones, troubleshooting is mostly limited to software ones. Don’t forget, if software solutions won’t work, the cause if most probably beyond your ability to fix. It’s not really a bad idea to contact Apple and send the phone in.

If you are looking for solutions to your own #iOS issue, you can contact us by using the link provided at the bottom of this page.

When describing your issue, please be as detailed as possible so we can easily pinpoint a relevant solution. If you can, kindly include the exact error messages you are getting to give us an idea where to start. If you have already tried some troubleshooting steps before emailing us, make sure to mention them so we can skip them in our answers.

Problem #1: What to do if iPhone X YouTube app keeps crashing

I updated YouTube and tried to bring it up. When I did, it said YouTube crashed. I tried soft reboot, uninstall and reinstall, I logged out of YouTube, and I backed my phone up on iCloud. Still it keeps saying that YouTube crashed. I don’t know what happened to make it do this. It was working fine last night and it started doing this after I updated it.

Solution: We recently wrote a troubleshooting article for this same exact issue about YouTube. If you haven’t checked this troubleshooting article yet, we suggest that you follow our suggestions in this post: How to fix Youtube that keeps crashing on Apple iPhone 8 (easy steps)

If YouTube continues to crash after doing all our suggestions in that article, we suggest that you report the issue to the app developer under the app’s Help and Feedback section.

Problem #2: How to fix iPhone X black screen issue: turns on but screen stays black

I was calling using Facetime but the Facetime screen keeps shutting down, the audio remains but I cannot open the video part of it.  It happened last night as well. But this morning the screen suddenly went black but I can still hear like the camera sound when I tried to hold the Power button and Home button.  I connected it to power but it remained black.I can receive calls but the screen is black so I cannot do anything. I did not drop it or anything before this happened.

Solution: Something is probably wrong with either its software or hardware. To see if your iphone x has encountered a software error that it can’t resolve by itself, we suggest that you restore the phone in DFU mode. This procedure requires a computer with iTunes installed on it. Below are the troubleshooting steps that you want to do:

  1. Turn off your iPhone X. If you can’t turn it off because the screen is not working, wait until the battery is fully drained until the phone turns off by itself.
  2. If you waited for the battery to drain, make sure to charge the phone for at least 30 more minutes.
  3. In your computer, make sure that iTunes is running.
  4. Once your phone is turned off, connect it to your computer via a lightning cable.
  5. Press and hold down the Power button on the handset for three seconds.
  6. While still holding down the Power button, press and hold the lower Volume button for about 10 seconds. Make sure that you time it properly since holding the power button too long may simply restart the device.
  7. After about 10 seconds, release the Power button. Make sure not to release the Volume down button together with the Power button. Wait for about 5 more seconds after releasing the power button before you release the Volume Down button.
  8. If you performed the process correctly, your computer should display “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.” message.
  9. You can now start the Restore process by clicking on Restore iPhone button.

If the phone’s screen remains black after a DFU restore, you can assume bad hardware is behind the trouble. Contact Apple to set up an appointment for repair or replacement.

Problem #3: What to do if your iPhone X won’t turn on at all

Good day. I have an iPhone X that was working quite well up until recently. i had to updated to the latest version of ios(11.4.1) but it kept failing mid-way. i figured i might as well reset it for the new ios. after the reset and update however, it wasn’t able to finish the setup. when i tried to activate it it kept giving me an error saying it could not connect to apple server. i reset the phone again but it was still doing the same thing. i ended up taking it to an apple store and to my shock the Apple engineers there could not fix my problem or even come up with a solution. i tried to reset it again but now it’s not even switching on, previously it would get me to the setup stage where i got stuck with that “could not connect to apple store” message but now it just shows me the apple logo for 4-5 seconds and switches off. when i connect it to a laptop it does the same thing, apple logo for 4-5 seconds then off. iTunes doesn’t work since the phone can’t even turn on. i even tried to enter recovery mode and DFU mode with no success. could please assist me in any way or give me advice on what to do next, it pains me to know i paid so much money for this phone and now it’s not working. Thank you for your time.

Solution: There must be a problem with the hardware itself preventing the device from turning on by itself. The solutions you can do on your end are purely software in nature so if the device does not even power back on, there’s basically nothing much that you can do at this point. We suggest that you return your phone to your local Apple store so their technician can take a look at the hardware. For this issue, a physical check is necessary. If an Apple technician can’t manage to turn the phone back on, you’ll most likely end up with repair or replacement. Unfortunately, this is the most that can be done in this case.

Problem #4: What to do if iPhone X freezez and won’t power down

I have only had my iPhone X for two weeks going on three.  My phone has frozen on me but in the most bizarre way. The screen has frozen as if it has taken a picture of the apps and cannot move.  It does not show my time or date just the first page of apps. I have tried holding power button down to shut it down, it does not shut down.  I tried doing what you suggested above, holding the volume button up then down quickly then holding the power button, it did not work. People can call but my phone does not ring and when I press the apps on the screen nothing happens, no movement of any sort on the screen. Don’t know what else to do.

Solution: We don’t know the full history of your device so there’s no way we can tell you what’s going on. The system may have frozen, or one of the physical hardware buttons may have become unresponsive. Since the battery is non-detachable, there’s no way to cut the power and force the device to restart. The best thing that you can do right now is to wait until the battery is empty. After that, charge the phone for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on the device.

If the problem returns, bring the phone to your local Apple store to have it repaired or replaced.
