Can’t get online using mobile data on your iPhone XS? If Wi-Fi isn’t available and cellular data refuses to work, that can be a serious headache — especially when you need to browse, stream, or send messages on the go.
Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix cellular data issues on your iPhone XS so you can get connected again fast.
Check Your Signal First
Before diving in, look at your signal bars. If you’re in an area with poor reception or no signal, none of these fixes will help until you move to a better coverage area. If the signal is strong but mobile data still isn’t working, try these steps.
1. Toggle Cellular Data Off and On Again
Sometimes all it takes is a quick reset.
To refresh cellular data:
- Go to Settings > Cellular.
- Turn Cellular Data off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Restart your iPhone:
- Press and hold the Side button + Volume up or down until slide to power off appears.
- Slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
Now check if data is working again.
2. Try the Airplane Mode Trick
This quick toggle resets all network connections at once — and often fixes random data issues.
- Go to Settings > Airplane Mode.
- Turn it on, wait 30 seconds, then turn it off.
- Or just swipe down to open Control Center and toggle the Airplane icon off and on.
Once it reconnects to the network, try using mobile data again.
3. Update Your iPhone Software
Outdated iOS versions sometimes contain bugs that affect cellular performance.
To check for updates:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- If an update is available, download and install it.
If you don’t have Wi-Fi, you can also update using iTunes or Finder on a computer.
4. Reset Network Settings
This wipes out saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and network preferences — but it’s a great way to fix stubborn data issues.
To reset network settings:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode if prompted.
Your phone will reboot. Turn cellular data back on and see if it works.
5. Reinsert the SIM Card
Sometimes a loose or faulty SIM card is the culprit.
- Power off your iPhone XS.
- Use a SIM ejector tool or paperclip to pop out the SIM tray.
- Remove and inspect the SIM for damage or dust.
- Reinsert the SIM securely, then power your phone back on.
If the SIM card looks damaged or worn, you may need to get a replacement from your carrier.
Still Not Working? Contact Your Carrier
If you’ve tried everything and cellular data still isn’t working:
- Check your account status to ensure your plan is active.
- Ask your carrier if there’s an outage in your area.
- Request SIM re-provisioning or ask if an eSIM is available.
