Useful iOS 13 Tips And Tricks: How To Use Find My App

With the new iOS 13 update Apple have had a lot of new features and improvements making your device more efficient and more useful. One of the new features that Apple added to iOS 13 is the “Find My” app. It is the merging of the two previously available apps Find My Friends and Find my iPhone. Apple combined these two apps into one single app which is the Find My app. From the word itself, Find My, basically means the apps is used to Find friends and  find lost devices. 

Find my Friends , now Find My app allows you to find the location to those friends and family members who have allowed to share their location with you. You cannot locate a particular person if they haven’t given you their approval to locate them. Their location can be found using the People tab in  iOS 13 Find My app.

On the other hand, Find My iPhone, now called Find My app allows Apple users to find devices that have been marked as “Lost” via Bluetooth signal.

Locate Friends using Find My App: 

In order to Locate friends using Find My app, one must take into consideration some important points to remember. Firstly, it is always a requirement that before you are allowed to know the location of a particular person, it usually requires the consent of that person and second of all, 

There are two important things to know about location sharing in iOS: First, sharing a user’s location always requires the consent of that user. And second, location sharing is not at all times in mutual consent. Which means that just because you are sharing your location to that person doesn’t always mean that you can automatically locate them too. It takes two both consenting parties to allow sharing their locations. 

Add and Locate Friends using Find My app by following these steps:

  1. Go and tap to Find My app from the Home Screen.
  2. Tap on People, located at the lower left side of the page. 
  3. Tap on Share my Location 
  4. Locate and type friends name on the list of contacts you want to share your location with. 
  5. Then press Send
  6.  Choose the time duration you wish to Share your Location.

If you do not want to share your location, you can follow these steps: 

  1. Go to Find My app from the Home Screen
  2. Tap on People tab
  3. Select from the list the individuals you are sharing your location with
  4. Select from the pull up menu the option Stop Sharing Location, and Tap on remove friend 

Once the other party receives your notifications that you are sharing your location to them. They will also receive an option if they want to share back their location to you. In the People tab in Find My apps, you will see a map that will show you the locations of the individuals that have shared their locations to you as well as a list of contacts you’re sharing your location with. In order for a particular person to appear at the top of your list, you can mark this contact as Favorite. 

When you tap on a particular individual, it will display its current location on the map. There is also an option of Contact if you want to keep in touch, Directions if you want to know how to get to their location using Apple Maps and the location based notification tab for your contacts. Firstly, it notifies you when the contact on your list arrives or leaves a location, and secondly it notifies your contact when you arrive or leave a location.

Locate Devices using Find My app:

This is perhaps one of the vast improvements that Apple has added with iOS 13. This features allows you to locate devices that are marked as lost even without the need to use WiFi or Data Connection. How does this work? It as simple as when a lost device is marked as lost and that device becomes offline but it is in close proximity with another iOS device, it has its ability to make a connection to the other device using Bluetooth and thereby sending its location. To find a lost device, please take a look at these steps:

  1. Go to Find My app from the Home Screen.
  2. Tap on Devices tab. 
  3. A list of all Apple devices linked to your account. 
  4. Choose from the list and tap on the individual device.
  5. It will show on the map where the location of the chosen device is.
  6. Scroll down to find options such as Play Sound, Directions, Notifications,, Mark as Lost and Erase or remove the Device. 
  7. Notify Me option will alert if in any case one of the devices is offline, asking Find My app to make an alert when the devices becomes online again. 

Hide own location: You have the option to disable sharing location thereby hiding your own location from everyone else. To do this, simply:

  1. Go to Find My app from the Home Screen
  2. Select and tap on People tab.
  3. Scroll down and select Share my location. Toggle off Share my location tab.
