How To Fix The Apple iPhone 4 Won’t Charge Issue

It’s best to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version before doing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below. If an update is available then I suggest that you install it first on your device as this will minimize the possibility of the problem being caused by an outdated software version.

Make sure the charger unit is working

You should eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by a faulty charging unit. There are two parts that compose a phone charger and these are the 30 pin to USB charging cord and the adapter. The cord usually gets damaged easily so you should try using a different charging cord. You should also try using a different adapter to charge your phone in case using a different cord does not work.

Charge from a different power outlet

You might be plugging the charger to a power outlet that is not providing any power output. To eliminate this possibility you should try plugging the charger to a different power outlet. Take note that it’s best not  to plug the adapter to an extension cord but instead plug it directly to the power outlet if you are experiencing this issue.

Check the phone charging port

The presence of dirt or debris stuck in the phone charging port can usually prevent the device from charging. Make sure that the charging port of the phone is free from any debris by blowing air to it. In case the charging port of the phone is wet then you should dry this first by leaving the phone in a cool area for a few hours. The liquid present in the port will evaporate naturally. Check if the iPhone 4 won’t charge issue still occurs.

Try charging the phone from a computer USB port

If you are unable to charge the phone using its wall adapter then try connecting the phone to a computer USB port. Your phone will still charge this way but it is going to be a slower process. If your phone charges then there must be a problem with the fast charging pin of the phone charging port. You should try cleaning this pin or have this checked at a service center.

Force restart the phone

Sometimes the problem can be caused by a glitch in the phone software. If this is what’s causing the problem then you should try to force restart the device as this will refresh its software.

  • Press and hold the Home button.
  • While holding the Home button, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button.
  • Continue holding both buttons for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

Perform a hard reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a hard reset. This will revert your phone back to its factory condition. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to have a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Make sure that the phone is off
  • Insert the USB cable then hold the Home button while connecting the phone to a computer with iTunes running.
  • On the computer when you are prompted that iTunes has detected the iPhone in recovery mode click on OK.
  • Click on Restore iPhone.
  • Click on Restore and Update.
  • iTunes will begin to restore your iPhone.

If the phone still does not charge then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
