Below are the specific things that you can do to extend the life of your iphone x battery.
Avoid using third party cases when charging
Apple has designed everything in your iPhone X to allow all parts to work in harmony with each other. That everything includes the external case. Ideally, you don’t need to put a coat over your iPhone using third party cases. The stock case alone is enough to protect the internal components as well as to allow the device to charge the battery without overheating it. Adding an extra case can cause the battery to warm faster than what engineers have designed it to do.
If you notice that your phone gets uncomfortably warm when charging and you can’t help using a third party case, we suggest that you remove it first before charging the device. Not all third party cases generate excess heat during charging though so if the phone seems to be doing okay and no extra heat is produced, you can leave it as it is.
Keep battery in room temperature
Lithium-based batteries can work well under pressure and in a wide range of temperatures. In an ideal situation, you should be only using the phone (or discharge the battery) between 62° to 72° F (16° to 22° C). Using your device when the temperature is below freezing, or when it’s above 95° F (35° C) can potentially cause permanent damage, or hasten capacity loss. The moment the battery (not the phone) leaves the factory, it already starts to lose capacity in a slow rate. Once it’s installed in the phone and it starts its normal usage, degradation goes a bit faster. The more you use, thus the more charging cycles occur, your battery begins to lose capacity permanently. This is the reason why iPhone batteries eventually starts to show significant degradation two years after unboxing it. The constant cycle of discharge and charge day in and day out constitutes a battery’s wear and tear until it eventually dies out.
If you don’t take care of your device by discharging or charging it at extreme ambient temperatures, battery decay can happen even faster. Your iPhone’s software is designed to step in to limit charging the battery to only 80% when it senses charging temperature threshold has been exceeded but this may not work all the time. Charging or using the phone when ambient temperature is above 95° F can also lead to serious battery issue. The same is true when the battery is exposed to freezing cold.
As a general rule, treat your iPhone as you treat yourself. You work best when you are in room temperature so do that for your phone too. Leaving it inside a hot car on a sunny day is one sure way of shortening the battery’s lifespan.
Install app and iOS updates
iOS is an ever changing software environment so there will always be room for bugs. Apple and app developers are in a constant struggle to identify, fix, and accidentally create bugs from times to time. Once a bug has been ID’d though patches are then released to fix it so always keep everything — apps and operating system — up-to-date.
Update via over-the-air
The most efficient way to install an iOS update is by downloading it via your carrier’s network. To do that, kindly do the following:
- Create a backup of your irreplaceable files such as photos, videos, etc. The easiest way to do that is by using iCloud.
- Tap Settings app from your Home screen.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install.
- Enter your Passcode, if prompted.
- Tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
- Tap Agree again to confirm.
- Wait until the download begins. It can take a few minutes.
Update via iTunes
We don’t anticipate iPhone X devices to experience updating issues over-the-air at this time but if you can’t do it for whatever reason, an alternative is via iTunes in your computer (Mac or Windows PC). To do that, follow these steps:
- Create an iTunes backup. To be on the safe side, make it encrypted so all your password and other private data is preserved.
- Open iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC.
- Plug your iPhone X in using your USB to Lightning or USB to 30-pin Dock cable.
- Click the device icon at the top left to go to the device tab.
- Click Check for Update in the Summary pane.
- Click Download and Update.
- Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
- Enter the Passcode on your iPhone X, if prompted.
How to install app updates
Now that your phone’s operating system has been updated, it’s time to also update the apps. Keep in mind that updating iOS does not mean apps are automatically updated as well. By default, your iPhone X should prompt you if there are any available app updates but if you want to do it yourself, here’s how:
- Open the App Store app.
- Tap Updates on the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the Update button next to an app or game that needs to be updated.
Use smarts when adjusting your settings
iPhone X and iOS 11.2 (the latest iOS version at the time of this writing) has a lot of new cool features that you may want to explore. As such, you’ll most probably notice that your battery may run out quite faster than you expected. This is normal for new users, especially if they can’t keep themselves from using their new phone every possible minute. However, once the temptations to explore has died down, battery life is expected to last longer. If that doesn’t happen, you have probably left a few things unchanged, contributing to fast battery drain. To lessen battery decay everyday, you must do two important things in check — use wifi instead of mobile and lower screen brightness level — whenever possible. These two are the main reasons for iPhone X battery drain issues. That bright and colorful screen uses a lot of computing power, which in turn, drains the battery power quickly. Dimming the screen will definitely extend that battery juice significantly. We are not saying never to turn the screen all the way up. What you want to do is to dim it to the lowest comfortable level. To do that, follow these steps:
- Swipe up from the bottom to access Control Center.
- Adjust Brightness slider to the lowest comfortable level for you. The lower, the better.
Alternatively, you can use Auto-Brightness setting so your iPhone X picks the optimum screen brightness for you based on ambient lighting conditions. To use Auto-Brightness, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Set Auto-Brightness to On.
Use wifi instead of cellular network
Wifi consumes less power than the cellular radio so use it whenever possible. Here are the ways to enable wifi in your iPhone X:
- Swipe up to open Control Center, tap the Wi-Fi icon, and log in to a Wi-Fi network.
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi to access a Wi-Fi network.
Utilize Low Power Mode
If you think your battery doesn’t last long enough everyday before requiring another charge, you should consider using Low Power Mode. Brought about by iOS 9, this useful power mode alerts a user when the battery reaches 20%, and again at 10%. At the same time, these alerts also give a user an easy way to opt in for Low Power Mode via a single tap.
Low Power Mode works by automatically disabling some power hogging services and features to save power. For example,your email app will no longer be able to automatically fetch incoming mails, the screen automatically dims and locks when not in use, apps that use extra animations will not be allowed to run them, among other things.
Low Power Mode basically saves battery life by aggressively converting your smartphone into some sort of a “dumb” phone. But hey, it works and it’s really effective in giving you that extra battery juice you might need. In Low Power Mode, you should still be able to do basic things like send/receive SMS, make/receive calls, access the Internet.
To activate Low Power Mode, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Battery.
Once you recharge the phone, Low Power Mode is deactivated.
Check Battery Usage details
Another handy trick that you can do to help you manage power consumption in your device is Battery Usage Information. It gives you an idea of what apps are consuming a portion of battery power in a given period of time. If you see a particular app that significantly uses power all the time, even if you’re not using it, you should consider uninstalling it. To view battery usage information, just go under Settings>Battery.
Apps listed under Battery Usage information can show messages such as Background Activity, Location and Background Location, Home & Lock Screen, and No Cell Coverage and Low Signal. Below are the brief explanations of what these indicators mean.
If an app shows Background Activity underneath it, that’s an indication that said app is consuming battery even if you’re not actively using it. For example, if Music app shows Background Activity, it indicates that the app continues to run even if you’re using other apps. To save power, you can turn off background activity so apps that use it will be prevented from running. To do that, do these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Background App Refresh and turn it OFF.
If you rely on your phone to use email, you should consider using manual fetch of your data or increasing the fetch interval. Here’s how:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Tap Fetch New Data.
Location and Background Location
If an app shows Location and Background Location below it, it means it uses Location Services. Location Services uses GPS and a variety of other services in order to work so it also consumes battery power when left unchecked. To extend battery life, turn off Location Services for the said app. Here’s how:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Privacy.
- Tap Location Services.
In Location Services, you can see each app listed with its permission setting. Apps that recently used location services have an indicator next to the on/off switch.
Home & Lock Screen
Home & Lock Screen is an indication that the Home screen or Lock screen was enabled on your device. This can occur, for example, if the display was awakened by pressing the Home button or by a notification.
If an app shows Home & Lock Screen and it’s way up to the top of the Battery Usage list, it may be draining the battery faster by constantly displaying notifications. To turn off push notifications for an app, do these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap the app in question and set Allow Notifications to OFF.
No Cell Coverage and Low Signal
Constant search for cellular signal can drain battery fast. Your iPhone’s cellular radio is a power hog. If an app shows No Cell Coverage and Low Signal below it, that’s an indication that you are either in poor cell coverage area, or the software is in near constant search for a good signal. This second scenario usually occurs if your device has poor signal reception.
An effective way to prevent battery drain in this situation, especially if you can’t move to a location where there’s better signal reception, is by setting Airplane Mode to ON. To do that, swipe up to open Control Center and tap the Airplane mode icon.
Avoid charging to 100% when storing the device
If you plan on storing your iPhone for an extended period, be sure to leave the battery at 50%. Leaving it at 100% can cause permanent capacity loss, resulting to shorted battery use everyday. If you leave the battery close to 0% before storing it for a long time, the battery may discharge fully and fall into deep discharge state. This makes the battery useless and can prevent it from holding a charge at all. When a battery reaches 0%, there’s usually enough power left in the cells to continue to power the circuits. If these remaining power are fully discharged after leaving the phone uncharged for a long time, the battery becomes virtually dead as its circuits will no longer be able to function come charging time. To avoid draining the battery fully, charge it 50% and turn it off. Then, store it in a cool, moisture-free environment that’s less than 90° F (32° C).
Remember, no battery can work forever. The Lithium-ion battery in your iPhone X will eventually deplete and lose its capacity after a number of charging cycles. Apple claims that an iPhone’s battery can retain 80% of its original capacity after completing 500 charge cycles (discharging and charging). Assuming you charge your iPhone X once every day, you should see a significant reduction in battery life probably around a year after unboxing it.
Battery life vary by how much you use the device, the environment your phone works, and the settings you choose. If you can’t seem to fix a battery problem by doing all suggestions you can find online, you should contact Apple for additional support.
