This comes as a bit of a surprise to most of us, but according to a new report by Strategy Analytics, Apple could well be on its way to becoming the leader among 5G smartphone makers in the world by 2020. This is despite the fact that Apple currently doesn’t have a 5G device in the market, although the company is widely expected to offer all 2020 iPhones with a 5G modem onboard. Given this prediction, it’s a fair estimate to make that Apple will easily overtake all other 5G phones of the year.
It is hoped that by next year, carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile will bolster their 5G networks across the U.S. to provide nationwide high-speed internet connectivity. While there are multiple 5G phones available in the market today, only a few cities and areas in the U.S. currently support 5G connectivity, so adoption is still at its nascent stage. However, it seems like Verizon is currently leading the pack in terms of adoption thanks to its 5G Home Internet plans.
As for Apple’s 2020 iPhone(s), the company has already struck a deal with Qualcomm for the supply of 5G modems. Apple eventually hopes to become independent and produce its own 5G modem. One estimate suggested that the company may not be ready with its in-house 5G modem until 2023 at the very least. This means the company may have to continue working with Qualcomm over the coming years in order to provide a 5G solution to its loyal customers.
Do you think 5G will be one of the most popular and/or important features on smartphones in 2022?
