Apple iPhone XR Was the Best Selling Phone of Q3 2020

The iPhone XR has been adjudged the best selling smartphone of Q3 2019. This means the phone has been the best selling device in each quarter of 2019, while Q4 2019 figures will only be revealed in January. This is as per data published by Counterpoint Research. While the list also included the iPhone 11 in fifth place, the Samsung Galaxy A10 and the Galaxy A50 were reportedly the second and third highest selling phones of the quarter.

Here’s a look at the entire top 10 list:

  • iPhone XR
  • Samsung Galaxy A10
  • Samsung Galaxy A50
  • Oppo A9
  • iPhone 11
  • Oppo A5s
  • Samsung Galaxy A20
  • Oppo A5
  • Xiaomi Redmi A7
  • Huawei P30

As you can see, the list also includes a healthy amount of Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo (three phones), as well as Huawei. The report mentions that Xiaomi’s entry into the list was most likely due to its strong sales push in India. Samsung, the report claims, simply made its premium A series lineup cheaper while discontinuing the J series models. It’s quite telling that among the three phones that Samsung did manage to get on the list, none are flagships.

However, the same can be said about the iPhone XR as well as the iPhone 11, which are priced quite low compared to more expensive variants like the iPhone XS (2018) or the iPhone 11 Pro which broke cover a few months ago. It’s clear that Apple has struck the right chord with the iPhone XR as well as the iPhone 11 by offering premium features while cutting down the price tag. Apple’s marketing strategy has also worked in its favor, particularly in Asian markets where Chinese OEMs dominate the mobile industry.
