How To Fix “iPhone Could Not Be Updated. Error 14″ Update Using iTunes

First Solution: Check USB cable

Perhaps this is a common instance when receiving Error 14 message. Using an incompatible USB to connect iPhone can sometimes cause a misconfigured connection between the two. Make sure to use a compatible USB cable that is certified to use by Apple  or as much as possible make sure to use the USB cable that came with your iPhone when you purchased it. You can either try a different USB port on your computer to connect to or change your USB cable and then try to update iPhone again via iTunes to check if it resolves the problem.

Second Solution: Manage Storage Space

Updating to iOS 13 requires at least 5GB of storage space on your iPhone. Now if your iPhone is having less than the required space for downloading and updating, you can free up some space by deleting content, apps and data that you are no longer using for a period of time. Doing this can somehow help in fixing error message when updating using iTunes. 

To check and manage available storage space::

  1. Tap Settings from the home screen of your iPhone
  2. Tap General 
  3. Then tap About
  4. Scroll down to find the Available, the available space left on your device will be displayed. 

To Manage to free up some storage space if necessary, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home Screen
  2. Then tap iPhone Storage tab
  3. Next, delete the apps that you find unnecessary, are no longer useful, or is taking too much of your storage space. 

Third Solution: Delete, Rename or Move Corrupt Firmware

Error 14 will usually appears when the firmware files gets corrupted and or damaged. The updating process will not commence. You can try to remove, rename or move to a different directory the IPSW files from the root folder of your computer. Its location though will depend on the operating system of the computer that you are using. Refer to the lists of locations for the different operating system of every computer.

  • macOS:  iPhone- /Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates 
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
  • Windows Vista,7 and 8: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
  • Windows 10: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

Fourth Solution: Update iTunes 

All Apple devices needs their software to be up-to-date as updating to the latest available software helps fix bugs that may have caused software related issues and or other problems with the device. 

To get the latest update of iTunes, launch iTunes from your computer. You will then see if your version of iTunes is up to date or if there are any available updates for download. 

Once you’ve updated to the latest iTunes, try to connect again your iPhone and update using iTunes to check if the solution solved the problem with Error 14. 

Fifth solution: Force Restart your iPhone

Doing a force restart on your iPhone can help fix Error 14. Since this can remove all the saved settings and will lose any unsaved work, make sure to have a backup of your iPhone device before doing this. 

To refresh your iPhone, restart/reboot your iPhone by:

  1. Simultaneously press and hold the Power/Sleep & Wake Button and Volume Down Button until the device turns off.
  2. iPhone automatically turns on. Wait for the Apple Logo to appear on the screen. 
  3. Finally, release the Power/Sleep & Wake Button and Volume Down Button. 
  4. Enter Passcode or Face ID if required to gain access of your iPhone.

Retry updating your iPhone using iTunes to check if forced restarting your iPhone fixed Error 14.
