iPhone Charges Slowly After iOS 14 Update

In this troubleshooting guide, you will learn what to do when your iPhone charges slowly and understand the reason why such a problem occurs.

Hardware issues like damaged charger and incompatible power adapter are likely to blame when you’re having slow charging problems on your iPhone. However, it is already a different story when the slow charging issue started after installing iOS 14, because it’s possible that it’s due to a firmware issue.

When it comes to iPhones, the firmware always plays a role in the charging process. In fact, your device will boot up when connected to its charger. It follows that if there’s some kind of an issue on your iPhone that affects the services that handle the charging process, you may encounter some charging-related problems.

In this post, we will try to show you the things you can do if your iPhone charges slowly. But before anything else, make sure that you’re using the original charger and charging cable. Also, make sure that there are no issues with them. Once you’re ready, try to see which of the solutions below can fix the problem.

First solution: Disable “Optimizing Battery Charging” feature

In an effort to protect the battery life of all iOS devices, Apple introduced a new feature in iOS 13 to slow down the charging process. Your phone will automatically stop charging when the battery life hits 80% but still act as if it is 100%. Then continues to charge when the system detects your phone activities or when you are about to use your phone. If in case this feature has been enabled on your phone without your knowing, simply disable the feature to speed up the charging again. Here is how:

  1. From Home, go to Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Select Battery Health option.
  4. Scroll down to and tap the Optimized Battery Charging option.
  5. Then select Turn Off option to disable the feature.

Once this feature has been disabled, the charging of your iPhone will speed up again. To check if your phone is already charging faster, connect your iPhone to its original charger and plug to the power outlet.

Second solution: Power it down and charge

Turning your iPhone off will also close all applications and services that run in the background. Sometimes apps use up the battery faster than the power adapter can charge. So to know if this problem is just due to some apps that run in the background, power down  your device and then connect it to its charger.

Normally, the device will power back up once the charging process begins but there won’t be any apps that run in the background if that happens. If this doesn’t fix the problem, then try the next solution.

Third solution: Reset all settings on your iPhone

Phone settings that were automatically overridden after the new iOS implementation may have triggered the symptoms to emerge. Therefore, deleting these settings including the misconfigured values and options will likely help fix the issue. To do so, perform all settings reset on your iPhone and restore the default options. Here is how:

  1. From your Home screen, launch Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Then select Reset all settings from the menu options.
  5. Enter your device passcode when asked to continue.
  6. Select the option to confirm all settings reset.

This reset is proven to fix post-update errors, so hopefully, the slow charging issue on your iPhone will be fixed.

Fourth solution: Try updating your iPhone

If the first few solutions failed to fix the problem but you’re pretty sure it started after an update, then it’s probably a bug in the new firmware. If it’s a widespread issue, Apple will immediately roll out a new update to fix it. Try to see if there’s a new update available and download it.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software update.

If there’s an update available, download and install it and see if the problem is fixed.

Fifth solution: Factory reset

If there’s no update available and your iPhone is still charging so slowly after doing the previous solutions, then you have no other choice but to reset your device. A factory reset will fix it if the problem is software-related. But make sure to create a copy of your important files and data. When ready, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed.
  9. Now enter your Apple ID password, and then tap Erase to proceed with the reset.
  10. Wait until your iPhone has finished the reset, and then set it up as a new device.

After the reset, try to charge your iPhone to know if it’s still capable of charging normal or if it can still fully-charge it’s battery.
