How to troubleshoot iPhone 8 with Messenger that keeps crashing

Before you troubleshoot though, verify and ensure that your iPhone is connected to the Internet and that the connection is stable. An active and strong Internet connection is one of the key requisites to use Messenger on your device without any issues. The Messenger app itself would suddenly stop working if it failed to establish a stable communication with the Facebook server so your device has to be online.

If everything is good with the Internet connection on your iPhone but the Messenger app still failed to work smoothly, then it’s time to try some workarounds to fix the problem on your end.

First solution: Restart the app.

Random issues can occur to any mobile app be it a third-party or pre-installed application. Most of the time, minor firmware crashes are to blame. But in other cases, major software updates would trigger the problem. For as long as it’s a minor glitch, there is a higher chance for it to be rectified by quitting and restarting the app. Having said that, try to quit the Messenger app on your iPhone 8 and then after about 30 seconds, launch the app again. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Quickly press the Home button twice to open the Recent Apps screen.
  2. Swipe up on the Messenger app preview to clear it.
  3. Or you can also clear all other background apps to prevent any of them from causing conflict.

If that failed to make the app stable, then you can move on to the next possible solution as demonstrated subsequently.

Second solution: Restart your phone.

It’s also referred to a soft reset in mobile devices. A soft reset is a highly recommended first solution to try when dealing with minor software errors or app glitches transpiring randomly on a smart device. This allows the internal memory to be cleared up and likewise refreshes the device system. It’s normal for an app to experience instability as depicted by random crashes and freezes especially when the memory is piled up with various contents and data processes in queue. And the simplest solution to this is a soft reset. For starters, here’s how a soft reset is done on your iPhone 8:

  1. Press the Side/Power button for a few seconds until the Slide to Power Off prompt appears.
  2. Drag the slider to the right to turn your iPhone off.
  3. After 30 seconds, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

Alternatively you can perform a force restart if your iPhone 8 gets frozen as the Messenger app crashed. It works the same a soft reset but perform using hardware key combos. If you find the need to do so, then follow these steps to restart your frozen iPhone 8:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

There’s no need to back up your data and downloaded contents as they will remain intact after these restarts.

Third solution: Update app and software updates (if available).

Some apps would crash or suddenly become a little bit rogue when a new update is implemented on the device. More often than not, a bug from the new update is at fault. It’s also possible for an app to act similar when it is out of date. Usually apps developers will rollout out new updates when a new firmware version or iOS version is released in order to make their app stay compatible with the new platform. That said, try to check for any available updates for your Messenger app as well as your iPhone software.

Follow these steps to check for available apps update on your iPhone 8:

  1. Tap the App Store icon from the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Updates icon at the bottom right side of the screen.
  3. If a new update is available for Messenger, tap the Update button to update the app.
  4. If you see multiple updates for your other apps, tap the Update All button to install all apps updates at once.

Installing the latest iOS update on your device may likewise be the key to fixing the problem if it’s triggered by some system bugs. Updates not only offer new and enhanced features but also contain fix patch to address certain bugs affecting different iOS devices. So if you haven’t already, you can quickly check for over-the-air (OTA) updates with these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Home screen then tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Wait for your device to scan for available software updates. If an update is available, backup your iPhone data for safekeeping then tap Download to instigate downloading of the update file. Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi to get this done.
  5. When the download is finished, tap Install to implement that new update on your device.

After the update, reboot your iPhone or perform a soft reset to ensure that the new changes are applied. Then test the Messenger app afterwards to see if it’s already working stable. If not, then try the next applicable solutions.

Fourth solution: Delete and reinstall the app.

Deleting the app will also clear cache and data from your iPhone 8. It can be the key to fixing the problem especially if a corrupted cache file or data has triggered your Messenger to crash more often. This denotes the need to uninstall the Messenger app from your phone. Here’s how:

  1. Tap and hold on any app icon on the Home screen.
  2. When the icons start to jiggle, tap the X in the corner of the Messenger icon to delete or uninstall it.
  3. Tap Delete to confirm.

After successfully deleting Messenger, restart your iPhone 8 as you usually do and then head over to the App Store to search for, download and install the latest version of Messenger app for your iPhone 8.

If none of the aforementioned solutions is able to fix the problem and the Messenger app continues to crash, then you may consider resorting to a full system reset as elaborated in the next procedure.

Fifth solution: Reset your iPhone settings to factory defaults.

This should only be considered as the last resort if all else failed to fix the Messenger app. There might be a more serious system error that caused conflict with certain app settings or the Messenger app itself. But you should note that this reset will wipe out everything from your device so creating a backup would be necessary beforehand. Once you’ve got everything backed up, you may proceed with the following steps to factory reset your iPhone 8:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to and tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode to continue.
  6. Then tap the option to confirm reset.

When the reset is finished, your iPhone reboots. After the reboot, you may continue performing the initial device setup to use your device again. Download and install the compatible version of Messenger app for your iPhone 8 then see if everything is working as intended. Otherwise, consider other options.

Other options

You may opt to escalate the problem to Facebook Help Center it persisted after performing all prior workarounds and other applicable solutions. There might be a more serious error that caused the app to become corrupted or unable to run as intended. If the problem has instigated from an iOS update, then you can also have it escalated to Apple Support for other recommendations. Doing so will likewise notify Apple about the problem and have it included in the next priority issues to fix in the next update rollout.
