Why does your iPhone 8 make no sound and how to fix it? [Troubleshooting Guide]

No sound problem appeared to be one of the common issues encountered by iPhone users ever since the first major iOS release in 2007. And just like any other iPhone problems, no sound problem remains bugging more and more people as it still exists even on the new iPhones like the iPhone 8. In some cases, the no sound problem is just tied to the ringer switch that’s set to mute while others are attributed to software errors and glitches on the iPhone. In worst case scenarios, no sound problem on the iPhone can be due to a faulty audio component like a damaged headphone jack, microphone or speaker on the iPhone. Unfortunately hardware-related sound problems already require service in order to get fixed. This means setting up a service center visit. How to fix your iPhone 8 that makes no sound

Before you start troubleshooting, try to adjust or set the Volume on your iPhone 8 to the highest level then see if that makes a difference. Just press the Volume Up key until it reaches the loudest. If that won’t work either, then you may go ahead and begin troubleshooting.

Toggle the ringer switch

Many people would tend to neglect or overlook this workaround and immediately jump into performing various methods to troubleshoot no sound problem on their iPhone. That said, verify and ensure that the Ringer switch is not set to mute or silent mode. You may have flipped the switch accidentally and that’s why your iPhone is suddenly not making any sound.

So here’s what you should do first:

  1. From the top left corner of your iPhone 8, flip the Ringer switch to turn Silent Mode on. Doing so turns off sounds on your iPhone. You will see the switch is in red/orange position and the silent mode or ringer notification briefly shows up on screen.

You can try a soft reset or usual reboot by pressing the Side/Power button then drag the Power Off slider to turn your iPhone phone. And then after 30 seconds, press Power to turn the iPhone back on.

Alternatively, you can restart your iPhone forcibly (force restart) with these steps:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. And finally, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Apple logo appears.

A force restart can be considered an option especially if the problem occurs while using certain rogue audio app that caused your iPhone screen to freeze. Similar to a soft reset, no data will be affected in the process.

Turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone 8

You may have forgotten that your iPhone is actually paired or connected to a Bluetooth accessory. In that case, it’s possible that the sound/audio output from your iPhone is rerouted to the Bluetooth device it’s paired with. To rule this out from the possible causes, just turn off Bluetooth on your iPhone 8. Here’s how:

  1. Tap to open Settings.
  2. Tap Bluetooth.
  3. Then tap the Bluetooth switch to turn the feature off.

Turning off Airplane Mode also turns off Bluetooth automatically on your iPhone.

After making these changes to your Bluetooth settings, restart your iPhone and then try to see if that fixes the problem.

Reset all settings on your iPhone 8

Sounds settings can be changed automatically or manually. If you’ve made some changes to your iPhone 8 settings recently and then find out that your iPhone stops making sound, it’s possible that the no sound problem is due to the recent changes you’ve made. The same thing can happen when you install new software update on your iPhone. Some updates automatically change or override your current settings and therefore may result to a conflict. To fix this issue, try to reset all settings on your iPhone 8 with these steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select the option to Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter the correct passcode for your device.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings to confirm.

Unlike a factory reset, this reset will not affect any of your iPhone data. Your iPhone reboots when the reset is finished so just wait until it boots up completely then try to check if sound or audio functions are now working properly on your iPhone.

Master reset or iOS restore
