How to Use Wi-Fi on iPhone 7 Plus: Complete Setup & Troubleshooting Guide

If you’re looking to get your iPhone 7 Plus connected to Wi-Fi—or just want to understand the Wi-Fi options on your device—this guide has you covered. From connecting to a network, managing saved Wi-Fi connections, setting up a hotspot or VPN, and even dealing with Wi-Fi issues, you’ll find all the essential how-tos below.

Enable or Disable Wi-Fi on Your iPhone 7 Plus

Via Settings:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Wi-Fi.
  3. Toggle the switch to turn Wi-Fi ON (green) or OFF (gray).

Via Control Center:

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the Wi-Fi icon to enable or disable.

Once enabled, choose your network from the list, enter the password if needed, and tap Join.

Manually Add a Wi-Fi Network

If your network doesn’t appear in the list, you can add it manually:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Other under the network list.
  3. Enter the Network Name (SSID).
  4. Tap Security and choose your type (WEP, WPA, WPA2, or None).
  5. Tap Back, then enter the Password.
  6. Tap Join.

Forget a Wi-Fi Network

Want to remove a saved network? Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the ⓘ icon next to the connected network.
  3. Tap Forget This Network.
  4. Confirm by tapping Forget.

This is helpful for resetting your connection to a problematic network.

Enable or Disable Wi-Fi Assist

Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to cellular data when Wi-Fi signal is weak.

To turn it ON or OFF:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Assist.
  3. Toggle the switch as needed.

Heads-up: Wi-Fi Assist uses cellular data. If you’re on a limited plan, consider disabling it.

Set Up a Personal Hotspot (Wi-Fi Tethering)

Use your iPhone 7 Plus as a Wi-Fi hotspot for other devices:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot.
  3. Toggle it ON.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi Password to set or change the password.

Now other devices can connect to your iPhone’s data connection.

Note: Some carriers require a hotspot add-on. Contact your carrier if the option doesn’t appear.

Set Up a VPN on iPhone 7 Plus

For secure browsing or remote work, you can configure a VPN:

  1. Go to Settings > General > VPN.
  2. Tap Add VPN Configuration.
  3. Enter the required details (provided by your employer or VPN provider).
  4. Save the configuration.

You can now toggle VPN on/off directly from the Settings screen.

Some setups may require a VPN app. Contact your IT department or VPN provider for help.

Reset Network Settings

If you’re having persistent Wi-Fi or network issues:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode and confirm.

This will erase saved Wi-Fi networks, passwords, and VPN settings—so keep your credentials handy.

Extra Tips for Using Wi-Fi on iPhone 7 Plus

  • If Wi-Fi is ON, your iPhone will not use cellular (3G/4G) data for apps that support Wi-Fi.
  • Keep Wi-Fi enabled during video calls or while using apps like FaceTime to avoid disconnects.
  • Watch for error messages or codes if you can’t connect—they often point directly to the problem.

  1. iPhone 7 Plus likes to randomly drop WiFi then when you go into settings you have no slide button to turn on WiFi and it shows nothing in networks. Restarting doesn’t work I’ve done the whole reset thing but the phone keeps doing this. Has anybody experienced this problem and if you have what did you do?
