Fix iPhone 6 Won’t Install Apps And Updates

Problem 1: What to do if your iPhone 6 won’t install apps and updates

Hi there.  I had some issues with my Paypal being in the negative. That has all been corrected as of today. I have 26 apps that are in need of being updated. I go to update and the circle spins then a warning pops up saying”unable to download app – “name of app” could not be downloaded at this time” then it has a done retry option. I am not too sure what is happening with it. I have also tried to update to the newest IOS version 11.0 and I get the same warning pop up. — Heather

Solution: Hi Heather.  There are number of things that can prevent an iPhone from installing app updates. Let’s discuss each of them briefly.

You’re not using the right Apple account

The apps installed in your phone are tied to a particular Apple ID. That said, if you have more than one Apple ID, it’s possible that you’re not logged in to the one that downloaded the apps you’re trying to update.

To check what Apple ID is associated with a particular app, do the following steps:

  1. Tap the App Store app.
  2. Tap Updates.
  3. Tap Purchased.
  4. Check to see if the app is listed here. If not, it was likely downloaded with another Apple ID.

Restrictions is enabled

Apple operating system on their mobile devices, also known as iOS, has an option that allows a user to disable various features, one of which is installing apps. To allow your iPhone to install updates, make sure Restrictions for Installing apps is set to OFF. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Restrictions.
  4. If prompted, enter your passcode
  5. In Installing apps option, make sure that the slider is moved to the left. If it’s on the right, it’s enabled and your phone won’t be able to install any app.

Make sure you’re connected to wifi

If you are directly updating apps in your phone and not via iTunes, make sure that you are connected to a wifi network. If you are on mobile data, you may not be able to install apps if you’ve already reached your limit.

Alternatively, try connecting to a different wifi network and see if update installation works there.

Check if you have enough storage space left

Updates can sometimes take a big chunk of storage space so be sure to double check the remaining space for the internal memory.

To view your device’s free space on the device itself, go to the Settings app on your device’s home screen, tap General, tap About, and then view the amount to the right of Available.

For your issue of being unable to install iOS 11, one of the following may be the cause:

  1. Not enough available storage space on your device
  2. Downloading the update takes a long time
  3. Unable to reach the update server
  4. The update doesn’t complete

If you haven’t cleared your storage device yet, be sure to do so. The best way to do that is to delete unnecessary files such as photos and videos or move them to another device like a computer. If available, you can also copy them to the cloud.

If your phone already has enough storage space (must be at least 2GB of available space) and it still can’t install iOS update, there may be a server problem at this time. Try to wait for  a few days before attempting to install the update.

Problem 2: iPhone 6S rear camera won’t focus, won’t work at all

Hi guys! How are you? My name is Vanesa and I live in Argentina.  I have an iPhone 6S bought almost 2 years ago in USA. For some reason my camera stopped working. For selfies it works fine, but the regular camera will just show a black screen. The lenses are not cracked and the phone did fall that I know. At the beginning it won’t focus, and then it just went black. I know it’s challenging to identify an issue like this. But do you know how can I fix this? I obviously restarted the phone a few times. And it’s been like this for a month at least.  I would really appreciate any recommendations that you may have. Thanks a lot in advanced! — Vanesa Rothberg

Solution: Hi Vanesa. Aside from restarting the phone, the only other software troubelshooting that we can suggest to you is to do a full restore. This will force the phone to update itself as well as eliminate possible bugs that may have developed, causing this camera problem. If a full restore won’t help, that means the rear camera has malfunctioned for some reason. You should contact Apple in that case.

To full restore your iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Create a backup of your files. You can do that in a number of ways but the fastest and most effective way is by using iTunes in your PC or Mac. If you don’t want to create a backup at all, you can simply erase everything on the phone by following the steps in this link.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
  3. We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
  4. Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
  5. Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
  6. Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
  7. Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
  8. After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.

Apple acknowledges that some iPhone 6 devices had faulty camera. This is not true for all iPhone 6 in the market but only affects a certain batch. Their iSight Camera Replacement Program for iPhone 6 Plus is still active at this time so try to visit their site and see if you can have the phone replaced this way.

Problem 3: iPhone 6S front camera only shows black screen

I bought a brand new iPhone 6s on Monday and by Thursday morning the front facing camera stopped working. The front facing camera only displays a black screen, this goes for FaceTime, Snapchat, and regular camera. I thought it may have been because I spent an hour on the beach Thursday morning, so I reset my phone, restarted my phone, and also turned it off for 3 hours and the front camera still displays a black screen. — Jesse Yorks

Solution: Hi Jesse. If a black screen shows when using the selfie camera, it’s highly possible that it may be damaged. We don’t know the full history of your device so we can’t tell how. However, if it’s been exposed to water, heat, or physically impacted, it may have suffered physical damage which requires repair. To check, make sure that you restore the phone first. Follow the steps we provide above. If the front camera won’t still work, contact Apple and let them check the hardware.
