Problem 1: iPhone 6 won’t record sound when using front camera

Hello there. Thanks for your time that spend t read and reply my email. currently I have change my broken glass in my Iphone 6+. since that they the microphone doesn’t work some time. when I start to record video from my back camera it has no problem. when i record my voice from memos it has no problem. when someone is calling me directly through SIM card and i leave on the speaker, the one on the other side can hear me. BUT, when I use my front camera and record a video no sounds is recorded. when someone is calling me through Whatsapp or other application and i leave it on speaker, i can hear them but they are not. what is the problem? best regards. — Ardeshir Saniee

Solution: Hi Ardeshir. An iPhone 6 has three microphones — one in the back next to the camera, the other is in the speaker area, and the last one at the bottom. The bottom one is used for regular calls or when recording voice memos, while the one at the back is for the rear camera when recording videos. This means that the issue lies on the one near the speaker, which is also the one being used when by the front camera.

If you’ve changed the screen before, it’s possible that the microphone may had been misaligned as it looks like a very small hole next to the proximity sensor. To fix the problem, open the phone up and ensure that the microphone hole is in line. You also want to check if the 4 copper connectors in the speaker are properly connected with the other 4 contacts in the front camera/speaker cable. It’s important that ensure that the flex cable is not ripped or broken. Cutting this cable or bending it too much can lead to problems.

Problem 2: iPhone 6 not making any sound

Simple. I lost the sound of my iPhone 6 Plus the other day. No matter what setting I try, i just have no audio sounds. My brand new phone was a gift one week ago. I previously had an iPhone 6 Plus and that went to pieces. When I got this new phone my daughter transferred all my info from my old one to this one. A few days later I lost every bit of sound. Am I impressed. — Sheribarry717

Solution: Hi Sheribarry717. An issue like this can have a few possible causes ranging from a simple settings misconfiguration to a more serious hardware malfunction. Below are the possible solutions to your problem:

Reset all settings. In a lot of cases like yours, the cause is settings misconfigurations. To ensure that everything is back to their known working setup, we suggest that reset all settings first. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings>General>Reset.
  2. Tap Reset All Settings.
  3. If presented, enter the passcode.
  4. Tap Reset All Settings to confirm.

Install iOS and app updates. If resetting all settings won’t help, your next step is to ensure that the operating system (iOS) and apps are up-to-date. You’re supposed to do this whether you have an issue or not.

Uninstall apps. This can be an optional potential solution if you never installed anything prior to noticing the problem. However, if you did add an app and you can remember what it is, try to remove it from the system and see if it helps. Here’s how to do that:

  1. On the Home screen, find the app and tap and hold it.
  2. When the icons start to wiggle, tap the X in the corner of the application you wish to uninstall.
  3. Tap Delete.

Factory reset the device. If the issue happened all of a sudden and there was nothing different at all that you did before that, you really don’t have much choice but to return all settings to their defaults. This will help remove any customizations and changes brought about by apps in the system.

Here are the steps on how to factory reset an iPhone 6:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your passcode.
  6. Tap Erase iPhone.

Remember, erasing all contents and settings means wiping the phone clean so be sure that you back your files up either in iCloud or iTunes or both. Also, make sure that you sign out of iCloud in your iPhone 7 to ensure Find My iPhone Activation Lock is removed.

Contact Apple support. If you’ve reached this part, that means that your iPhone must have a hardware malfunction. Since you’ve already performed all software troubleshooting that can be done in this case, you must seek a phone replacement from Apple.

Problem 3: iPhone 6 ringtone stopped working after an update, fingerprint sensor has become erratic

Since the recent update to iOS 10.0.2, my ring sounds don’t work.

Also, accessing my phone by fingerprint hardly ever works. I have to touch the home button several times before it allows me into my cell. I posted this problem on Facebook and I had numerous responses to the same issue about the ring sounds. Please acknowledge receipt of this complaint by email. Thank you. — Judi Oliveri

Solution: Hi Judi. The best solution that any iOS user can do when faced with issues after an update is to a full restore. If you haven’t done that, here are the steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the cable that came with your phone.
  2. We assume you remember your phone’s passcode so simply enter it when you’re prompted for it.
  3. Select your iPhone once iTunes asks you for the specific device.
  4. Once you’re in the Summary panel or screen, select the option that will restore your device (Restore).
  5. Confirm by clicking on Restore button.
  6. Wait for a few moments while iTunes restores your device to its factory settings. It may also take some time if iTunes will need to install an updated operating system version.
  7. After this factory reset, all software settings should be restored to their defaults.

Just like what we tell Sheribarry717 above, make sure that you create a backup first before doing this procedure.

Problem 4: iPhone 6 app sound disappears every few minutes

iPhone 6s brand new after getting a new one from Apple. Audio in speaker or any app disappears after 1-4 min. Phone shows that the audio is on, the seconds continue but there’s no sound. Only after restarting the app, will the audio comes back. With apple apps such as music, all I have to do is press pause and then play and the sounds come back. And disappear after 1-4 min again. Cell phone is a few days old. Problem is the same with Bluetooth. Please help, it’s driving me crazy! — Daniel

Solution: Hi Daniel. Did you restore an old backup to this phone? Sometimes, bugs can be carried over from an old device to the new one after restoring a backup so we suggest that you wipe the phone clean instead and then start over. Basically, what you want to do is to erase all apps and settings, and then install only official apps afterwards.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your passcode.
  6. Tap Erase iPhone.

Once you’ve done the steps above, make sure not to fall in the trap of restoring your old back up again. We suggest that you visit the App Store instead and install apps you need by adding them individually.

Problem 5: iPhone 6 speaker stopped working after accidental drop

Hi. I was in the shower today and I was listening to music. I went to change the song and I dropped my phone. I thought everything was good with it until I got out of the shower. The top speaker was very quiet and muffled. Even on full volume it was very quiet. The bottom speaker is completely fine but my dad just got me this phone and I don’t know if I have a warranty on it or if I have 15 days to return the product. I have everything it came with. Nothing in the box has been used except the phone. Please help I am very worried! — Eric Phillips

Solution: Hi Eric. You clearly have a damaged phone and there’s no amount of software tweak that you can do to fix it. We suggest that you visit your local Apple store and let them repair it. Keep in mind though that even if it’s still in warranty, that warranty will no longer be honored since dropping your device constitutes customer misuse, which automatically voids any warranty. This means that Apple can only fix the phone for a fee. Repair fee varies but you may be looking at a possible $100+ repair investment in this one.
