When this happens, the overall device performance would become affected as you don’t know when and which app would act up. Why do apps keep freezing and crashing on your iPad Pro?
Freezing and crashing apps are usually due to memory-related issues like when the device is running low on internal storage. The same thing can happen if the application gets corrupted after installing updates and likewise when an app isn’t up-to-date. Such problems are generally attributed to software-related factors including random system glitches, data corruption, malwares and bugs. Should the underlying cause is only a random system error or minor bug, the transpiring symptoms are usually just bearable and can easily be remedied by a few workarounds.
1st solution: Force restart your iPad Pro.
When apps are crashing and freezing, there’s a higher chance for your device to end up being frozen or unresponsive as well. If this happens, restarting the device is needed. But since it’s not responding to touchscreen commands, you will need to do the alternative restart called forced restart. A force restart works the same as the usual soft reset but it is carried out using the hardware buttons. A forced restart is basically how to restart an unresponsive iPhone or iPad. For starters, here’s how to force restart your iPad Pro:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Then, press and hold the Power button on the side of your iPad and then release when the device restarts.
Wait for the iPad to finish restarting and then try to use it again to see if the apps are still freezing or crashing.

2nd solution: Delete unwanted apps and contents.
If the problem occurs only to a specific application, chances are that the app has been corrupted and therefore needs to be deleted. After deleting the erratic app, you can reinstall it from the App Store if you still want to use it on your device. Otherwise, just delete the app forever. If the problem occurs to several apps, then that is likely a system-related glitch affecting certain types of apps. Or it could be due to a shrinking memory on your device. To rule out memory-related issues, try deleting unwanted apps and contents from your device. This will help free up some storage space of your iPad. Old apps and obsolete contents can also trigger other apps to misbehave so they have to be cleared out as well. Here’s how to delete unwanted apps from your iPad Storage:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Select General.
- Tap iPad Storage.
- Find and select the suspected app.
- Then tap the option to Delete or Uninstall the app.
After deleting all unused and obsolete apps, restart your iPad to clear cache from its memory and to refresh the operating system. Then try loading some apps to see if the problem is gone or not.
3rd solution: Update apps on your iPad Pro.
Apps that usually show adverse symptoms are those that aren’t updated. Updates are rolled out to maintain the app’s optimum performance and stability. That said, apps that are not up-to-date are more susceptible to bugs and thereby unstable. To eliminate this from the underlying cause, install all pending app updates on your iPad Pro from the App Store. Here’s how it’s done:
- From the Home screen, tap App Store.
- From the App Store main screen, scroll down to the bottom and then tap on the Updates tab. Wait for a few seconds to view the list of all apps with pending updates.
- Tap the Update button next to Skype to install pending update for the application.
- If multiple app updates are available, then you can just tap on the Update All button on the top-right of the screen to install all app updates simultaneously.
Restart your iPad after installing all app updates to apply the recent software changes and to refresh your apps.

4th solution: Install the latest iOS update for your iPad Pro.
Aside from updating apps, it is also imperative to update your device software. Keeping the device software up-to-date is recommended to ensure optimum performance and bug-free system. If your iPad is still able to run other system functions and has stable Internet access, then check for new iOS updates to download and install wirelessly.
- To check for OTA updates on your iPad Pro, go to Settings-> General-> Software Update menu.
An update notification usually appears if a new iOS version is available for your device. Before updating, back up all critical files saved on your iPad Storage to iCloud or iTunes drive. Then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install new iOS version on your iPad Pro. Don’t forget to restart your device after updating to refresh the system and apply the recent changes.
5th solution: Reset all settings on your iPad Pro.
Problems like this can also be attributed to invalid settings on the iPad Pro. This is usually the case if the symptoms instigated after making some changes or customizing your iPad settings. The same thing when a new update containing some bugs is installed. To clear this out, performing an all settings reset can help. Doing so will erase all customized settings and restores the original or default values. Here’s how it’s done:
- From your Home screen, tap on Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and then tap on Reset.
- Select the option to Reset all settings.
- If prompted, enter your passcode then follow the onscreen instructions to all settings reset.
When the reset is finished, your iPad should restart. Wait until it is finished booting up and then you can start enabling individual features and functions that you want to use again on your iPad Pro.
6th solution: Restore factory default settings on your iPad Pro.
You may have to resort to a full system reset if the problem persists after applying the previous methods. Stubborn symptoms are usually attributed to major system errors and therefore need to be rectified to restore your iPad’s normal routines. In this case, you can do a factory reset to erase your iPad and restore its factory defaults. Symptoms attributed to complex system errors will therefore be obliterated. But before you do this, be sure to back up all your critical information from the iPad storage to iCloud or iTunes. Otherwise, you will lose them permanently. Once your backup is secured, you can proceed with these steps to carry out a factory reset through settings:
- From your Home screen, tap on Settings.
- Select General.
- Scroll down to and then tap on Reset.
- Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
- Enter your device passcode when ask to proceed then follow the onscreen instructions to confirm factory settings reset.
If the above steps aren’t applicable because your iPad’s display is not responding, then you will need to use iTunes instead. This also denotes the need for you to secure a computer either Windows or Mac OS that has the latest version of iTunes app installed. Once you have the equipment set, proceed with these steps:
- Connect your iPad to the computer using the supplied USB or Lightning cable.
- Open iTunes on that computer then wait for it to sync your iPad Pro.
- If your iPad appears in iTunes, select it and then click on the command button to instigate backup creation before erasing your device.
Follow the onscreen prompts to reset and restore factory default settings on your iPad Pro through iTunes.
Are apps still freezing and crashing on your iPad Pro?
A factory reset is often enough to deal with complex software issues among iOS devices. If by any chance that failed to solve the problem and your iPad Pro apps are still freezing and crashing, then you may have to consider opting for iOS restore and restore your iPad from a previous iOS backup.
